I only ever started one thread, and some big people posted on it, but my question was misinterpreted, and it died fairly shortly afterwards.

if you want to come up with good posts i recommend you read some books on philosiphy its a very great way to get your mind started on questions...but the problem is that most people on the internet arent intelligent enough to understand the question some people post (no offence)

Then you post incredibly fast.
I would never be able to get 1,000 in eight days.
And that is why I succeed.

When I make a big thread I'm proud of, like my reviews or my Anniversary Bananza [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.201186-GrinningManiacs-One-Year-Anniversary-Thread-Bananza-2-Electric-Boogaloo#comment_form], I tend to lurk in them FAR too much, and I therefore notice every single comment, and the time between each comment, which I feel is too slow for something I put effort into..blahblahblah

basically, I get paranoid and depressed. Which is why I'm going downstairs now for a few hours.

Congrats on the grotesquely obese post count!
I do that too. Except I also post quite a bit on them.

In regards to the original question, I've only posted a topic once, and it got lost in a sea of 4chan posts IMMEDIATELY afterward.

It's something of a catch 22 starting a topic here. You'll likely get the "use searchbar" or "this has been done ____ times before" replies. On the other hand, if you prepare for this by actually using the searchbar, and posting in an existing discussion, you get hassled for resurrecting an older thread.

In the end, though, it doesn't really matter. Unless you're after the badge, starting a discussion thread isn't as important as the discussion itself.
It does happen. It's why you either have to post a current even before everyone else or come up with something off the wall, like asking about other people's posting...
