I just watched 2001 and was a little bit confused by the ending. I really had no idea what it meant.

I need a little help understanding it if anyone has any idea.

The creators intentionally set out to confuse people.

If you really want to know you could just waatch the sequel. Or read all the books, that might explain more.

Dave is forced through the stages of life, then evolves into the Space Embryo. Then he is joined with the Monolith, which is explained in the later books.

EDIT: Also, HAL was downloaded into the Monolith too.

I loved the movie, up until he entered the portal and there were about 10 minutes of flashing lights.

Everything else was amazing though, so feel free to vall me a philistine or whatever else. I just didnt really get it

They did not do it to confuse people. And Clarke said that the sequel's ae not actually in the same universe, they are parallel universes, of a sort. They're what might have happened.

I thought the film was impressive, well shot, well made and, well, pretty, but couldn't honestly say I saw what all the fuss was about. I'm a Kubrick fan, but it left me cold. Probably because it was so god damn confusing

There's a really awesome video on YouTube that does an analysis of the ending. Let me find it for you..

Thar you go. That should hopefully shed some light on it.
Ok that helps a lot! thanks!

Read the book. It explains the plot properly. The film really isn't about telling a story at all. What did you think of it, by the way?
I really liked it, I've always been a fan of science fiction and my friend almost hit me when i said I hadn't seen it. Also after I was finished I got so many joke in movies, games and TV shows that I didn't get before.

Glad to hear it. I think it's an absolute masterpiece - quite possibly my favourite film. But it seems to be a "love it or hate it" thing. One of my friends fastforwarded through the ending and has never forgiven me for persuading him to watch it.
I kinda see why, i think I would have liked it more if it had ended 10 minutes earlier but I also guess the last 10 minutes are what make people talk about it even to day.

Also, it is about evolution... how branches just dry up and die (artificial intelligence) and how other fuorish (man as a star-child) it is in the intro sequence: we became men when we started to think and reason.

HAL is a tragic and incredibly interesting paradox: he was instructed to lie to his crewmen, however, he is logical and lying isn't something he can understand or assimilate, reason why he goes insane, HAL is Frankenstein's monster, tearing the world around him appart, asking why he has no soul while he contemplates humans behave like machines (remember the bithday celebration bit)

2001 is one of my favorite films, I could talk about it for hours, from the scripting, to the directing, music selection and its profound meditations about man, the existence of god and our place in the universe...

Sorry, got carried away, film school flashback hehehe

I honestly couldn't stand it long enough to get to the last 10 minutes, it's such a boring movie.

20 mins of action spaced out into 120? nah.

2001: Space odyssey is the greatest film of all time for me, but it's not the most fun to watch. That may not make any sense, but I believe the film has more to say about life, the universe, and everything then any other film I have seen. There is so much meaning behind it, and it says so much about everything. That said, it's not the most fun thing to watch, but it can't be, and in the end, it's delivered in the only way it possibly can be.

The film relies a lot more on stimulus then it does on plot or dialogue. The film is more of an experience rather then a coherent story, although it does manage to have one. The film is less a singular thing, and more a collective of things, all juxtaposed against each other to form a picture. The film is more like a painting with each aspect of it being a different color, but they are all related in the sense that they are all paint, and they all are part of the picture.
