Arkham Asylum. Hands down. I'm sure Assassin's Creed 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 are just as good, I'll check them out at some point but for me, its going to have to be Arkham. Loved that game to pieces.

Hmm... haven't really played that many new games in 2009. But Hearts of iron 3 is great. It's never going to win, but it's great.

I think The Beatles: Rock Band was game of the year. I haven't played that much of Assasin's Creed or Modern Warfare, but I think I have a pretty good idea of how good they are.

Assassin's Creed 2 EASILY.

Very interesting, non-patronising story; great characters, setting and graphics; fitting music; a sequel in every sense of the word, bar nothing.

Arkham is a close second, but even though I loved it so AC2 was just absolutely brilliant.

WET.
Should I explain why now or wait until someone calls me a retard for thinking differently? I think I'll say my piece now.
The game is fun. Yahtzee can say what he likes, the magazines and websites can say what they want too, but when it comes down it, jumping around shooting stuff while listening to psychobilly is fun and I had more fun playing that game than I had playing any other game release this year... or last year come to think of it.
That's not to say the game is without flaws, it has massive flaws. The level design is a bit confusing, when you're down to the last dude to kill, it's hard to tell where he is, the platforming can be a bit leap of faith, but they didn't really make the game less fun. The leap of faiths did piss me off but I'm willing to forgive it as it really a small factor. The random weapon practice sequences pissed me off too, completely pointless.
So what I'm saying here is, while it's definately not a flawless games, or even a particularly great game, it's an incredibly fun game and that's why I play games, for fun. Worth mentioning I don't have Arkham Asylum yet and the war/tactical shooters bore the hell out of me.

Huh? Half Life and Half Life too got 9.6 as an average. This is just reading from the metascore this year. Modern Warfare 2 got 94, Street Fighter IV for 93, Uncharted 2 got 96, Chinatown Wars got 93. Arkham Asylum got 91, as you say. Do your research before making bold claims.

Here's what I got on Arkham Asylum.
Modern Warfare 2 is a stellar example of an FPS with a truly engaging story. It's a bit short but makes up for it with a fast-paced multiplayer mode.
Left 4 Dead 2 continues the tried and true formula of L4D1 with new survivors, new locales, and new weapons and enemies. It isn't a world of change from the first one, but makes up for it with some awesome new gamemodes.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a great throwback to old days of platforming. It does sort of follow from the world's oldest video game formulas and has some kinda dull 3rd/4th person characters, but makes up for it with the correct decision of not sparing new players on difficulty.

Here's the thing. When I played Batman: Arkham Asylum, I did not use those words in my mental review. "It makes up for it". Logically, the award should go to the game that is PERFECT in every region, and even if it's not the best game of all time, I would definitely put it as "the most perfect". Every facet of the gameplay from the exploration to stealth to fistfighting just screams fun and echoes it back to you with the oh-so-Batman-like atmosphere. Batman didn't have to "make up for" anything.

Really? I sort of looked at those fights as a bit necessary in order to be built up. The failed experiment introduces you to dodging, the Bane fight teaches you how to deflect a charging enemy with a batarang, then the first few Titan enemies teach you how they're a little different from Bane. Then it unleashes the full shitstorm when you fight multiple Titan enemies with mooks coming off the rafters. The initial impression from anyone would be that it's a stale rehash of what they have, but the fact is it forced you to fight very differently to accomodate for the absurd number of different enemy types trying to kill you at once. And, the difficulty curve to show you how to do it was very appropriate as it stepped up.

Borderlands or Left 4 Dead 2 were amazing. But I actually didn't buy many games this year. I think that last year was much better for gaming by far.

How on earth can the Game of the Year Edition of a game win Game of the Year?
