OH MY GOD!! WE'RE DOOMED!! Just like we were in 2000, the 80's, the cold war, etc, etc, etc.... let's just get used to it, humans are doomed anyway, from our own doing's or nature, we can't stop it.... so just live life, and get on with it...

FINALLY!! A world apocalypse!

I figure I'll thrive in that situation. No law... but I doubt it'll be that drastic... but a guy can hope?

Eh, I'm no scientist, so I really don't know what to make of this news...

Can't wait.
Good sir, I do like your thinking.

My word, do you know what this means?!?!?! We must EXTINGUISH the Sun! Quickly! Before our computers break!!!
Immediatly assemble a team of our hottest scientist/astronauts!

But seriously ?
Worst case is 1 trillion in damages ?
Yes.... a catastrophe that would do that much damage, would certainly lead to the end of the world..... *cough*
But one of the scientists needs to be Kurt Russel

Worse case scenario, this disrupt power grids, the internet, communications, and a whole host of other issues. It would be bad, but not Earth shattering.

Most likely we won't even notice it. This is not the end of days. That won't happen til Lord Zemu returns to give all the non believers purple nurples.

This happens often, right. We are constantly hit by solar storms, and sometimes, when there's a solar wave, your GPS signal doesn't work, etc. If this gigantic uberstorm is actually as big as they claim then it means that there will be some sattelite interference and perhaps some problems with airline companies, nothing more.

Although I may have lost a bet if this happens.
You have one of those "When will the world end" bets going? I love how stupid some people are (I'm guessing you're the one betting the world doesn't end). My [sub]ctrazy[/sub] uncle had a bet like that with a friend once. One thought the world would end on X day X month X year and the other thought the world would end on X day X month X year. Then, my mom pointed out that the bets were stupid, because if either of them won, they couldn't collect the bet.

The problem with that is this: 99% of ALL modern electronics are shielded against electrical interference. That includes solar flares.

Do you know what happens if an EM pulse occurs? It shuts down your computer. You turn it back on, and nothing's bad (unless you didn't save before it happens).

The world won't end, nor will electronics stop working in 2012. If you're worried? Just shut down whatever you wanna protect before it occurs. Problem solved.

Seriously, Electromagnetic pulses are GREATLY exaggerated in effect.

Note to self: Wrap my diabetic supplies and a fridge in lead...

I seriously hope that won't happen. If it does, I am gonna get screwed over!

Humanity has been a tireless force for change in the short existence we've had on this planet ... it's foolish to think that we couldn't survive (even in a worst case scenario of wholesale devastation to electronics and satellites) just because the lights go out and there's no tv.

Sure it would be bad for a decade or two in a worst case scenario, but really what's a measly decade when all in all our lives are very well safeguarded (in the West anyways) and it's not likely that this provision of safety will merely disappear just because the Sun has a temper tantrum.

As some of the more educated have noted, solar flares aren't that big of a deal due to Earth magnetic protection field, however, if they are massive enough, they can cause enough *damage*(so to speak) to the protective field to weaken it, so that more charged particles can get through. And that is not good, sure it may only be as much as to disturb com links but it can be much much worse. I for one am hoping for pretty big one to fry all the tech and send us back to the stone age for a while and perhaps thanks to that sort out some major problems .

Meh, it is much more likely to happen in 2013 or 2014, they just chose the 2012 date for more impact. Anyway, the situation is easily fixed, simply coat your PC in lead.

Zeithri is right, the whole 2012 thing is an excuse to steal your money, especially in buying flawed science books on it.

Hold on a minute, it might trip your circuit breakers. Then you'll need to head down to the shop and buy a few more fuses. Shit is about to get real.

OT: Yeah, I'm very sceptical of any event that just so happens to occur in 2012. I have no doubt it'll happen, but not on the scale they claim it will and probably not as close as they say. Like the article stated, it could happen in the next 100 years or even 100 days. They're only guessing it'll happen soon.
