2012 Summer Olympics: The Thread

We have a few threads with peple going on about how they don't care, so here's a thread for those of us who do. We've had the opening ceremonies (though for some reason they're not being played on the telly in the US for another couple of hours), and the football tournaments are already underway.

I watched a few football matches yesterday. The UAE was doing very well, up until they let that goal in and seemed to lose their edge. Before the goal, they were pretty much doing as they pleased with Uruguay's attacks, then they just lost it.

How upset with the referee in the Great Britain/Senegal match this morning? Lots of fouls that really should have been carded.

And did anyone actually watch archery today? I tried to watch, but the stations in the US seemed happier to replay UAE/Uruguay and TGB/Senegal instead.

Our media isn't to happy about the penalty decision, but what I'm getting from most people is nobody's expecting us to do that well to be honest. We have some promising players in the team, and it's good to see Giggsy playing, but that's all they are. Promising. So there has not been a lot of hype about team GB in Britain. Compared to the EUROS or World Cup.

Still, I'm watching and rooting, and as always hoping for a miracle.

Didnt catch the football, but I saw the highlights of a couple of games including GB's game. It didnt look too enthralling.

I'd be interested to hear opinions on the opening ceremony, especially from non- Brits.

Personally I think it's been rather interesting so far. They've got and idea and stuck with it, and for the most part its worked pretty well.

I was blown away by the ceremony. It was so well done and it had Rowan Atkinson and and J K Rowling.

So cool mate. Loved it when the rings rose/descended to combine into the Olympic symbol.

As near as I can tell, they put it on tape delay, because it would be too early on a Friday for most people to watch. Which I thought was what DVR was for, but whatever. It's starting now, at least on the East Coast.

I've not really been keen on the games, but the opening ceremony was very good. The problem was that the opening section was so fantastic that it made the rest look bad by comparison. That might just be because Isambard Kingdom Brunel is a hero of mine though and Kenneth Brannagh was fantastic

When you think about it, that bit was pretty Grimdark really...........

But remember, Paul McCartney was the bass player for The Beatles who did not go into signing and CERTAINLY DID NOT APPEAR AT THE OLYMPICS.

I'm watching it now on the East Coast and at one point you hear the Tardis sound. (You know the takeoff/landing sound)

Idk maybe it's just me, but I've found it to be kinda meh. It has had its good moments, but I just can't help feeling like im listening to some guys remix video of songs that do not go well together. Especially the guy rapping the same chorus over and over in the middle of other songs...

Ah well, I thought we done quite good. Hell, i enjoyed it. But i guess its just too hard to please our fat American cousins.

What, precisely, is there to "live down"?

I hadn't realized that Brazil was hosting the next summer games. I can't imagine living in Brazil, getting prepped for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics at the same time.
