If you have a passing knowledge of the various conspiracy/wacko/new-agey rumors floating around the internet/world I am sure you hear the one about the date in 2012 tha the mayan calander ends and the world is supposed to end.

If you are not aware of it, then I will point you into the direction of this wiki link(loathe as I am to reference wiki)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_doomsday_prediction

Now with a movie coming out from the people who brought us such memorable movies like "10,000 BC" and "the day after tomorrow", one of them being Roland Emmerich, is bringing us a lovely new disaster movie based on this concept of the worlds eventual demise/doom/disaster in the year 2012.

Getting to my point I guess the question is whether or not the wonderful people here at the escapist buy into the concept of a world changing/ending event in 2012. Or do you think its just a bunch of new age BS that will become fodder for movies and shows as the date draws near?

My stance is that the people who believe in this psuedo mysticism are blinding themselves to the more mundane facts that are behind the calender ending.

Of course, in my very twisted and misanthropic way I think it would be cool to be alive to see a major global change/catashrophy and hopefully survive it to witness what humanity might do afterwards.

Edit - on second thought, probably ignore my douchefuckery as I obviously do not know how to do a search properly, second time around I found the myriad number of topics on this, so please carry on with your lives.

I highly doubt it... and this "end of the world 2012" stuff isn't new... it was predicted by the Mayans.

Cracked is not always a credible source, mind that :)

Anyway I think the year will NOT end. It didn't end in 2000, it didn't end at any of nostradamus' prohpecies nor did any other apocalypse theories in the history of mankind ever work out...

One of Cracked's most well researched articles in ages and it well echoes my opinion.

Fear of 2012 is moronic...

Yeah.
Hey, I edited my post after discovering my mistake, apparently I didnt select the right forum to search when I went looking for the topic, in fact there were no topics based on this. That probably should have tipped me off I was doing it wrong.

Wht does anyone even care? we had a good run. Bring it on
Also, the wole 2012 thing is bs. As i have already told you, the world will end in 2735 ish when we blow up the earth to get to the marshmellow centre and kill the leprachauns so we can steal their socks and take over the universe.

I wouldn't say it's New Agey, I would say the 2012 deal is just stupid. The world is going to end because the Mayan calendar had a finite amount of numbers?

Allow me to illustrate the absurdity of all this. I'm going to make my own calendar. Right now it's 7 BS, seven days ago was 0 BS, and next week is going to be 14 BS; 1 BS per day. Fourteen is the largest number I think you'll ever need -- I have no concept of 15 or 16, or of making my counting system base 14 -- so I'm just going to end my calendar at 14 BS.

Now some pseudo-intellectual prick comes along six days from now (13 BS), looks at my calendar, and concludes that because I didn't come up with a date beyond 14 BS, it must mean I thought the world was ending after 14 BS. In other words, the very next day. For unknown reasons, a select few of the populace embraces the idiotic supposition, and it becomes a meme. You can infer the rest from there...

Problem solved.
Yeah, and I bet you'll redo your math and make it the next day when it doesn't happen.

You apocalypse prophets and your shoddy mathematics. A pox on you all.

I dont like pessimists. All of my nieces and nephews encourage my Belief in life and for you to say you hope the world ends is to rip my heart out. It is a bad thing to say.

remember the bible code

in 2006 we all die

well it came and went and nothing happened

again 2012 will come and go

and then some other calendar or book or code will say we all die in 2018 or something

it like a priest claiming that the apocalypse is nigh every week and then pays off a bit more of his mortgage

its all nonsense

2012 is not the end of the world, merely the end of that specific calendar :)
The mayans ended around the end of the last one; not humanity. Perhaps they believed not that it was a doomsday scenario, but a time to progress, for society to evolve.

And *perhaps* that's what was "destined" for dec. 21st, 2012 at 11pm? Society goes "hey, time we pulled our shit together".... :/

Bloody hell, not another freaking 2012 thread! That's like 8 in the past couple of months, and probably about 20 since I joined!

Nothing will happen, it's a cycling calendar (apparently, I don't know for sure), though with the current climate of everything it wouldn't surprise me if something did happen. But it won't.

Atheists, christians, and I believe muslims should not believe this. If you are not religious and put all of your faith in science, what is so spiecial about it besides the native mexicans supposedly said so. If you are christian, the bible tells us we will have no idea when the end of the world will be, so I'm absolutly positive it won't be in the year 2012. I'm sure this applys to those who follow islam as well.
