Apparently still alive and well.

Summary two young women of black ethnicity were unable to join any sorority on their campus of University of Alabama for the sole reason that they were black.

I really hope this story is fake I want it to be fake but with so many picking it up.

I have a sister who is a Delta one of the historically black sororities I know from her that old Alumnae have a lot of control over who joins and actually have direct control over the on campus organization.

The details in these articles correspond with information I've gotten from her in the past. Which leads to believe the article.

I don't have any rant or anything like that. It just makes me feel uneasy, that the fact there are still so many people who will instantly think the worst of you based on physical characteristics over which you have no control.

The only thing I will ask people to do here is to go to imgur and upvote the post for the purpose of awareness not because it's a positive thing but because simply letting things slide doesn't help anyone and doesn't solve problems.

Well, the story says it all, really.

The young members of the organizations picked these girls and wanted them in. The old people actually in charge blocked it.

Time will solve this issue. It's just a matter of the old people dieing.

Considering that some American high schools still have racially segregated proms, I'd say that this is possibly true and definitely plausible.

Wow, I get that it is alive and well but to that degree I have to say I find it rather absurd, yeah I have to say I hope it is fake and that it is simply that they did not get in due to the fact fickle people can (and tend to) run sorority or a fraternity. There is likely a far more level headed couple on campus but a lot of it can be "we think you are odd you cn not join LOL"

On the note of racism today in America you have this odd edge where a lot of people make raciest remarks in a way that is intended to satirize rather than offend if you want an example and have seen Jango Unchained anytime some drops the N word. It is always intended as a mark against]t the person who spoke it to the point where you just start to ask when he will get his head blown up. While this has the power to disarm racism by using their own ammunition against them it also make it harder to say... is that actually derogatory.

Reminds me of the news story with the segregated proms that are still being held and the students that tried to do something to fix that.
http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/30/living/wilcox-integrated-prom Sounds like they had a good time.

Since racism was something I was kinda worried about when I came to America, that story, along with quite a few others, did nothing more than make me feel that much more uncomfortable away from my island home. Back there, black is the majority and also the governing power since our independence from Britain, so I was just an ordinary woman. Over here, I feel like a black woman, something I've never felt until stepping off the plane, if that makes any sense.

The fuck! Wow if that was my school I would have been pissed despite the fact I did not go to prom and had no intent of doing so, still I may have gone and made some headline news in such a school I mean the end of high school I was dating-ish a back guy so that is interracial and homosexual and yeah this is not a thing to fuck with me on we are going to prom or jail and either way it will be on YouTube (well of YouTube was a thing back then) but as a video on the internet!

Well, that is the deep American South (more specifically, Alabama, one of the worst of the southern states). With the exception maybe of Florida and Louisiana (can't speak for Louisiana on experience, but I did know someone from there), the deep American South still hasn't caught up with the times in terms of racial equality, which is still far from perfect to begin with.

my hometown closed down school for two years when segregation was lifted, its been what, 50plus years since and this place still has pretty defined 'black' and 'white' areas... i mean i grew up in the ghetto with all walks of life, the only people i have 'issue' with are freakin white people, as in white-bread-white-people, yes this may sound weird considering i'm caucasian but i really dislike those people, since more often then not they're extremely racist, close minded, tempermental and just pretty much looking for any way to screw a person over for a buck... i don't like those people... and believe me, i've tried REALLY HARD to not to but every time i come across one... yea, this kinda bs happens...

and it ain't a matter of 'just wait it out, they'll die eventually' like i said, over 50yrs we we're STILL getting this bs? why? cause they have kids, those kids have kids, and by then the stupid and prejudice is genetic... recisim and sexism never left, there's no 'resurgence' its just being more 'obvious' since we've got crazy media and they're getting dumber and dumber, i'll give one thing for poor education in the US, it means people don't have 'tact' anymore so stuff like this becomes more obvious/apparent...

i want it to change, i really do, nothing bothers me more then when someone i'm related to goes on some idiot rant about those '-insert derogatory slur here-' when there's no reason for it, no damn reason, we're all in the same boat, we don't need this foolish blind hate for no damn reason... dislike a person for their actions and opinions, not for what they look like or who they love...

and don't think its just 'the south', that's bullshit, i'm from the south (that's right ghetto and southern run bitches) and to be honest i saw more overt appalling racism in indiana (birthplace of the KKK woo!) and those 'northern' states then i ever saw around here... its all over, not just the 'deep south', its where ever white people have carved out a hovel in the wilderness, small towns are almost always all white and racist as all hell from my experience, north south east or west... 'ethnic people' like the cities, cause there are less crazy whities XD

please excuse the sarcasm, where i grew up racism was funny, it wasn't till we 'grew up' and understood adults that we learned it was so mean and hateful, i still prefer to just joke about it because the less serious it is the less likely people are to take it seriously... *shrugs*

ugh... isms... always isms...

Basically this. I'm not saying it's right (cause it's not) but I'm also not saying I'm in any way surprised.
Live outside of the bible belt and things are a lot different.

i cant help but wonder, if this is such a big problem, then those who are discriminated against should boycott the area and move.

Racism is still something that is a huge part of society. We are marching steadily away from hatred of that calibre though, things like gay people getting married etc shows that we are moving forward.

I think as long as black people still say "nigga" racism will still be there. I remember watching a youtube clips of the view and this black was getting all uppity 'cos this old white woman said "******" while reading the headline but was okay with Whoopy Goldberg saying "nigga" even though they both pronounced it the same... She even said "I know she doesn't mean anything by it but it's just something about a white woman saying it".

Then you have black comics, Dave Chappell (did I spell that wrongly? ), Kate Williams and Martin Lawrence off the top of my head all do "you know how white people are different to nigga" jokes... Only heard one guy even come close to jokes of that nature, Louis C. K who says "I'm not saying whites are better but it's clearly better to be white".

Eminem said "a lot of truths are told in jest" although I probably messed up the quote and attributed it to the wrong person.

Speaking of rappers, how often do black rappers say "nigga"?

I think if you want to get rid of racism you need to stop using words that are related to heavily racist things and stop trying to separate and try to unite.

Well, yes, it's rather obviously alive and well.

Or possibly people should, you know, try to deal with the problem. Telling people they should just leave their homes, their jobs (especially things the way they are), their friends and family, because other people are discriminatory...how is that any kind of solution?

You know, I think this may be the first time, outside of historical works, I've seen someone use that phrase that with no apparent irony.

Florida confirmed for the worst, worst people without question.

But all of the south sucks. I can't name one state on the southern border I'd ever consider living.

However easy it is to paint the entire South as heavily racist based on the past, I would caution against taking that course of action.

There's racism everywhere. Some people just don't want to admit it. I don't deny the existence of ignorance on a perhaps larger scale where I live, but it's not nearly as bad as some people think (keep in mind that I have lived in two relatively developed areas in Mississippi, so maybe my own experiences are skewed).

Anyways, the problem's already been mentioned. It just takes time to get all the grumpy old racists out of positions of power.

There will always be racism in the world. Whether black hating whites or whites hating blacks. But its a small minority now and the norma anymore as it once was. There is a black president and that should give all black people the hope that they can do anything they want. Only problem that needs to be dealt with are that alot of black people are the majority in poor shitty areas of cities where there are no chances for them. But things will get better.

I think the south hates everyone. An episode of a UK show Topgear drove through their with slogans like "I love gays" and "Palin for president" and "Nascar sucks" on their cars. They got lots of negative honking on the motorway. When they pulled over for fuel, people threw stones and a woman said they should get lost as she called her friends and a pickup pulled up with people with guns.

So yeah, screw the south....Obama, bomb the south......they are lowering your countries overall IQ. :)

Er...there's "a" black president. The US government, judicial system, financial leaders and so on are still dominated by white men.

Having a black president does, of course, point to a massive improvement over never having any. But it's hardly the be all and end all.

Just let me know before he goes through with that plan.

I live in one of the southern states, and while it is not quite the KKK rallying deathtrap some may think it is, sometimes it can still get pretty bad. Being stopped for driving too nice of a car (my car is not even that nice) or looking suspicious when you are taking an evening stroll. It still happens. All you can do is be as polite as possible. I have made it my life goal to shatter as many peoples' stereotypes as possible. If i can change one person's view on race, than i will be happy.

God speed you wonderful man! (woman?) I think that is awesome and good luck.

As to this "black" president thing, pretty sure he's black AND white, so not completely black, he's mixed. (Yeah yeah, I know he's more black than white but still)
