Oh... what a surprise, Agar is in as night-watchman!

Still difficult to call the result, since Haddin's not a bad hand at the crease and everyone's hoping for something special from Agar... (and I say this as an Englishman... -_- )

England edged ahead thanks to Swan at the end of the Day. Once again Australia's middle order looks vulnerable. The pitch isn't a bad one, batting last isn't huge disadvantage, but at 6 down I think England have the best chance of winning

Aussie Aussie Aussie, OY OY OY!!!

Despite being an Ing-er-lishman, I'm routing for the Australians in this series. Much to the displeasure of my uncle. Was veeeery impressed with Agar the other day, new blood new vision.

Or in the case of Shane Watson, old blood and double vision.

Barring any more heroics from Agar I think they're gone. But either way it will make for an exciting finish.

It just goes to show what a useless captain Clarke is. He wastes a review on a not-really LBW instead of saving it for a bloody obvious dismissal.
To be fair, that's all the captains in world cricket. They really don't seem to get that the DRS is not for marginal calls, yet they all seem to use it for fractional not outs.

And worse, if they happen to get the 50/50 decision right, the commentators say "That was a good use of DRS". No it wasn't! It's there to eliminate howlers, it's not a strategic review for half-chances.
Yep. We saw the exact same thing again today from Clarke and Watson.

That's not outside the realms of possibility. In his third domestic 4 day game he made 71* for Western Australia to help them get over the line by two wickets. They were 6/203 when he came out to the crease, chasing 375. He and his batting partner put on 121 runs for the 7th wicket. Scorecard [http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia-domestic-2012/engine/match/576105.html]

The entire England attack is in the top 15 of test bowlers in the world, Agar has never faced an attack that strong before. In the first innings he had the advantage of the fact the English bowlers didn't know that he could bat and tried to soften him up with chin music. That tactic didn't work and they know he can bat so they will go for line and length. Swan on a last day pitch is going to be a real examination of his technique.

Let us all sit back and watch a bunch of disgustingly over paid, over hyped, and on the whole awful drunks fling abuse at each other, both on and off field, when they are not throwing heavy balls at each others heads and hitting said balls with bits of wood.

Sounds like so much fun.

Yeah, I suspect when Swan and Anderson get off the leash tomorrow he'll have his work cut out for him.

It wasn't all at the chin though, I know its cliche, but he played each ball on its merits... However he did get himself out trying to smash his way to a century. I still think Australia are a chance IF Haddin & Agar can make most of the remaining runs. If the next wicket falls with anything more than 20 runs to go, then that's game over.

Don't get me wrong Agar batted brilliantly in his first innings, but England did bowl at him as if he was a genuine number 11. This time England will bowl at him like Australia does to Broad.

Agar gone for 14. Anderson or Gemma Broad spotted the fact the Agar likes to stand on his off stump to give himself room. He failed the examination of his technique

64 runs to get, 1 wicket left. Not looking good Australia =(

We need our batsmen to stand up, Cowan and Clarke have been in pretty shocking form lately. This is not the same Michael Clarke who hit a triple century last season. Still, props to the English bowlers, it's a very strong attack thats gonna be hard to overcome in the upcoming tests. At least it was close, that bodes well for the series as a whole.

EDIT: 20 runs, 1 wicket CMON AUSSIIEEEEEEE!
Great effort Haddin and Pattinson, now please don't let the lunch break ruin you.

Is it going to be Edgbaston 2005 or Headingley 1981. Great test match cricket, there is nothing like the ashes

Crickey, mad props to the Aussies on a cracking tail end performance. As nervous as I now am about the result, I'm also secretly enjoying just how competitive the opening test has got. Edgbaston '05 was the point at which my passing interest in cricket being a genuine love, at least as far as test cricket. Part of me is happy to see it potentially repeated. Most of me is wishing this had all been wrapped up two hours ago...

I'm still banking on Anderson cracking Pattinson within a couple of overs after lunch, though. It's going to really close, and really exciting. But I think we'll do it.

Of course, that could be the bias talking ;p

I'm sorry, but what? Did your best friend die in a horrific fielding accident or something? Cricket is, for the most part, one of the friendliest, welcoming and engaging sports there is. The only sport I can think of anywhere near on par with it in terms of sportsmanship is tennis, on the part of both players and fans.

Furthermore, if you have such a ridiculous hatred of the sport, why the deuce would you come into a thread obviously titled to draw in those who appreciate cricket? Spite? Just to get a reaction? I suppose if the latter, my reply means it worked. But still... wow.

Yeah, and Australia is looking a hell of a lot better than we were in India (4-0 loss), but then again at least the English can maintain a pitch and not just a strip of concreted mud. There's just something about the Ashes that an English or Australian cricket fan will always hold higher than the rest.
