ME2 stands in the middle ground of "Promising Space Opera RPG" and "Oops, everything we were leading up to was this literal space whale".
...OK, let me try making a clearer point.
First, it took away an entire bunch of upgrade trees [None of which mattered anymore anyway].
A great amount of looking over your guns to find 'best mod combo' [As in: mission start, enemy sighted, hold trigger, repeat] was removed for flat 'this gun best gun, upgrade it' [None of which mattered in 3, where mods returned].
Also, it added a 5th type of weapon to carry around. Which was removed again for 3, for some reason [I enjoyed carrying around a 2-shot nuke launcher].
The story went some pretty cool places that ultimately never got explored.
Disappointed by lack of Mako? The Hammerhead DLC is probably the best for bridging that gap [But don't expect it to return in 3].
As far as things go, it had a few interesting bits, and those are what got hit hardest.
But, I'm mostly just annoyed by how I can remember accidentally romancing Miranda on what was meant to be an 'absolute Paragon, no romance' run.
