An Exclusive Interview With Yahtzee

To help make The Escapist's fourth birthday even more special, Russ Pitts asked Yahtzee to answer a few questions that would appear only in the commemorative PDF version of this week's issue. In the interview, Yahtzee talks about what it's like working with The Escapist, how fame has changed his life, why gamers like dick jokes and what happened to that girl he broke up with, prompting him to start making videos on YouTube.

Great interview.

Y'know, if he just spent a little more time on the forums people might not think of him as a jerk after chatting with him.

I just hope he keeps making ZP videos - I will forever be grateful to him, because watching ZP eventually led to me actually finding and noticing the escapist magazine, forums, reviews...well, the escapist.
He led me to this site, and its been a blast...

100th video on the 5th august eh? Id like to see what it is. ^^

From the first ZP that my friend recommended to me I was hooked!

It was just so refreshing to find a critic who was actually critical about video games rather than traiditonal video game magazines and be paid by the developers / publishers to rate the game highly and completely overlook ANY problems.

The fact that Yahtzee can turn critical obeservation into comedic genious is a skill he should be very proud of!

When I was in video game stores, slating crappy games (probably a little too loud :p) the staff thought I had tourettes!

Now people like me have a foul mouthed champion of crappy games - long live Yahtzee!

It's interesting to see what Yahtzee says outside Zero Punctuation. He's actually a nice guy from the looks of things and (as has already come up in the news room) people just assume he's a jerk to his fans without them actually getting to understand him properly.

Kudos to you Ben, for brightning up my day with your words of wisdom! It's because of you I got to know The Escapist, so thank you for that aswell!

Looking forward to seeing your games, when they're out of the works, aswell as the new pilot.

Cheers.

Exactly as I expected. He likes his job and isn't the jerk some people may think he is. I hope more people read the interview than commented here.

I have listened to a good few of the podcast's from Australian Gamer, ones where he is a guess on it, and he does seem like a nice enough guy. I think as a critic, people kind of expect him to be a jerk, so they would expect he is just naturally good at it, because he is an ass in real life, where he actually isn't.

Forgive me if that made no sense, it's 4 in the morning where I am.

A bit more detail on the man *adds print-out of interview to the Yahtzee shrine*.

Can't agree with Idwater more. Yahtzee still is a refreshing change in game critics on the whole. They give their 90 to 95s and completely ignore the flaws (hello Oblivion). Worst of all, far too many reviewers miss out on the opportunity to mock and make fun of badly finished end-products.

Some good jokes in the interview, has Yahtzee reached a Zen state of calm in his self-absorbed ways?

Yahtzee is the only game reviewer I really listen to. It's a mix of his brutal honesty and the way he can articulate the experience of actually playing the game so well, instead of just summarizing the game mechanics and slapping an X/10 rating on it.

Simply sublime from start to finish.

If I saw Yahtzee on the street, forgive my twatness, but I'd have to say hi, one way or another. How did this interview take place? Over the internet, in person? Ah well, it doesn't matter so much, but it's interesting to see another side to Yahtzee, indeed. Still though, I never saw him as a jerk or a bad guy, merely... a badass game critic.
