Personally I think Valiant Hearts did it a hell of a lot better. Mainly because they were using the style of pulp, which was popular at the time, to convey the very real horrors of the war. It helps that they didn't shy away from the tragedy of the war and shoved it right into our faces, and even the more goofy moments felt more like blissful distractions and tied in greatly with people being ignorant of just how bad the Great War was.

Either way, the whole thing just JRPGs things a little too much. I'm willing to accept certain amounts of JRPG tropes, I actually like 80% of the anime tropes in Fire Emblem Awakening. But when you put it in a game that has not!concentration camps...my tolerance...slips.
