With so much emphasis on Graphics, 3D renders and such;
are 2D games completely dead, or are they doomed to be
cheap casual games?

No. 2D Games are still fun. I'd love to see some 2D remakes updated with modern graphics. Imagine modern remakes of Metroid or The Legend of Zelda. Or Sonic back when he was good.

I loved Braid, and Plants vs Zombies. Sure 3D is a natural step up, but most of the time it increases the complexity of the game, and you don't want too much complexity in a casual game, for example.

And this is why Tetris was, is, and will always be popular (and deservedly).

In truth 2D games are for the hardcore gamers. I think that 2D will most likely never die due to the nostalgia factor.

Some of my favorite games of all time are 2D. A current favorite is I Wanna Be the Guy. It looks good, sounds great, is hilarious, and will kick your ass with its difficulty. While I enjoy a good FPS, there's something comforting about going back to the simplicity of a d-pad and 2 buttons.

2D games can still have success, especially for casual gamers. There are plenty of good online 2d games that I could easily see selling well over the Xbox live marketplace or something if they were improved upon.
