Oh dear, that's very very difficult. The problem with doing a list, especially one this short, is immediately after writing it I think of another film that ought to be on it. As such, the forthcoming list is by no means my definitive one, but they will absolutely be films people ought to see.

Seven Samurai - to my mind, the single best film ever made. Beautifully shot and acted, it's the perfect combination of action, character and philosophy which means that it'll appeal to just about anyone.

Star Wars: A New Hope - not necessarily the best of the series, this is nonetheless the film which started one of the most successful franchises in history, created the modern blockbuster, and changed the way films were made forever.

Oldboy - almost certainly not to everyone's tastes, but essential viewing all the same. It's bloody, depressing, and there are a couple of scenes that are incredibly hard to watch. Nonetheless, it's weird, experimental cinema at its best.

NB: to 90% of the people who've posted, and to all those to come. Don't just list the films you feel we should see, tell us why we should see them. Give us something to discuss!

Funny how often Fight Club and Watchmen keep popping up on people's lists. I hope that means the people who are suggesting Fight Club actually understood it. It's one of the more subversive films out there. One person mentioned it as a movie to "get you pumped up."

*facepalm*

I agree that Watchmen is one of the finest film adaptations around, probably the best superhero movie ever, and an excellent film. I'd say it's a little too rough for a top three essential movies list, but I suppose if people are recommending the 3 prequel Star Wars movies (horrible films), Spirited Away(disappointing, in my opinion), Spaceballs (a funny movie, but it doesn't really stand on its own if you're not a SW fan), and freaking Starship Troopers, which I personally despise with a passion... I guess it doesn't matter if Watchmen isn't perfect, it still beats the pants off of those other picks.

There's way too many classics on the list, so I'll go for 2 outta 3 personal faves that won't be. (not that there's anything bad about 'classics', they earned their space on the IMDB top 250 )

Idiocracy

(just as a warning of an impending armageddon that people are ignoring in favour of financial and eco disaster, Oh and it's funny).

Shawshank Redemption

(just because it is)

Office Space

(because if everyone watched it, maybe we'd have less people like Lumbergh in the world, my ex boss was pretty much a clone of him, right down to the 'ummm...yeahh...we're gonna have to..' and we genuinely used to play a game where we thought up ways to slowly murder him, he inspired such hate. Oh and it's funny)

Black Hawk Down
The Way of the Gun Inception
Smokin' Aces
Smokin Aces? Really? It doesn't suite my personal tastes and I can accept that as being bias, but I feel the technical tricks and character development were better down in other movies. I'd definitely recommend Pulp Fiction over it.

Pulp Fiction
Full Metal Jacket
Shawshank Redemption.
I enjoyed Lazlo Soot. That is what I have to say to that statement.
