There are 1 player, 2 player, 4 player, etc. games but is there any game with a co-op max of only 3 players. The closest thing I can think of is archenemy mode in magic 2012.

You either have no friends, 1 friend or 3 friends....

Who has 2 friends?

That's just bizarre.

On Topic....

I have no idea, I just came here to crack that joke.

Lord of the Rings: War in the North. I was completely psyched for this game, as was my friend. We were planning on getting it and finding some random third play to join in our quest.

Then the reviews hit. And my heart broke. I've been thinking of picking it up now that I'm sure it's super cheap, but I wasn't going to pay full price for a game that was...less than good.

Its mainly hard because either you put the upper half of the screen in two screens, and put one large rectangle on the bottem giving the third person an advantage, or you divide the screen in 3 slithers that dont give much of verticle or horizontal angle.

It's not common. Halo Wars is the first one that comes to mind as the max team size is three human/AI players.

Some arcade cabinets used to be 3-player as getting a fourth person positioned would have been too difficult.

Most games you can play 3 player coop with are games that are really 4 player coop and the AI takes a role.

Transformers: War for Cybertron, it's not really balanced for it though. There will always be one player with no ammo.

Call of Juarez: The Cartel.

Never played it, just remember hearing it was 3 player co-op all the way through.

From where is that weird "joke" from? I have not heard it before.

Anyways, I am also in the same situation as OP. Usually its 4 player games what you are looking for. Either the games is made so that 3 player are just as playable as 1, 2, or 4 (Borderlands series does this well), or its a straight up 4 player game but the AI takes the roles of the renaming characters (Left 4 dead series).

Most 4 player games that I know go with the Borderlands method, I dont know any other game that uses the Left 4 dead method. A shame, because sometimes having an AI do random crap (along with the weird epic moment where it actually does something right) around 3 skilled players was priceless.

Besides, this is all assuming than we are talking about LAN/Online play. No one uses splitscreens anymore since its inferior in almost every way to LAN/Online play (Why I am getting this odd feeling than someone is going to quote me on this to counter what I said there:..)

Get it. My friends and I played it together, and we quite enjoyed it. The only reason I haven't replayed it a couple of times is they have too many close ups with some really, really ugly spiders.

Not a lot exist probably because during split screen the screen will have to be divided into 3 parts, one half of the screen for one player and quarters for the other two. It would give a rather unfair advantage to the two with the smaller screens. That's the only reason that I can think of for lack of 3 player co op. A game can be made with 3 player co-op though The Three Musketeers.

No, ok I'll be leaving now.

Rampage, Trine, they've been mentioned. What springs to mind for me is Transformers: War for Cybertron, that co-op was awesome, maxed out at 3 players. The upcoming Dungeonland also has 3-player co-op, though it is still 4 players ( 3 vs 1 sort of scenario).

There's a great website if you like co-op games called Co-Optimus, I searched and they have a tag for 3-player co-op, so if you want to see what is arguably a comprehensive list, go check that out: http://www.co-optimus.com/tag/3-player-co-op

Hey! I have two friends! On the subject, it's a possibility that GTA:V might be 3 player co-op, at least in some aspect.
