Thirty US troops, said to be mostly special forces, have been killed, reportedly when a Taliban rocket downed their helicopter.

This is the largest single loss of life in the Afghan conflict.

Here's the official BBC link.

So, pretty tragic, and what's more, this is the same unit from the group that took down Osama Bin Laden.

What's your take?

[HEADING=2]EDIT:[/HEADING] Since people have just seemed to jump the gun here, this particualr unit were the ones that took down Bin Laden!
Is this just coincidence!?

The news over here said it was an "accident".

Then again, I never believed it was an "accident". I always thought it had been attacked. A multi-million dollar helicopter doesn't just malfunction like that.

And they say we have a "free press".

EDIT: Oh, NOW they're saying it was an attack. God, I really fucking hate the news media, bunch of lying, dick-yanking bastards!

While it's sad that people are killed like that, I can't say I am particularly moved.
It's war. People firing rockets at eachother is to be expected.

My condolences go out to those left behind from the attack.

Fighting guerilla warfare tactics is hard, unless you have the ability to target the "indignant" fighters individually. Sigh. There's a reason Alexander the Great didn't go into Afghanistan. Hope the bastards are killed.

So sad. America's greatest were lost today. God Bless them for what they've done.

The problem is we need to adapt to these methods of combat, upgrade the technology to allow for them to easily avoid these accidents. We have the capability, we just never use all of our resources in certain areas. Their equipment should be made irrelevant and unable to effect us. Then again, there is that "rumor" that Al Queida is being supplied by Iran. Maybe they are the true culprits behind this.

Shit 30 Troops? I guess the Taliban worked on their aim, last I heard they could hardly hit stationary targets.

Anyway my condolences go out to the families.

At the risk of sounding incredibly insensitive Oslo was worse. Not only were there more, they were all innocents. Military combatants losing lives in a known combat zone due to the actions of enemy forces is less of a tragedy more of an occupational hazard.
Premature death is always a sad thing, but this isn't exactly shocking, surprising, or even really news.

That's the bloody truth of war folks, people die.
Yeah, but usually not in this large a number.
We all know people die in war, but does that make it any less tragic than a murder, or even a string of serial killings?
And if thirty people had died due to a serial killer, you wouldn't be saying that people just die.

I agree with you, although any loss of life is still sad.

You're right but we aren't talking about Serial Killers we are talking about War. Your serial killer remake has no reference here.

This wouldn't have happened if they hadn't been there in the first place.

The US puts it's nose in everyone's business and then cries foul when they get punched in the face.

It's war, people die. Still, the Coalition will kill 100 Taliban within a week for revenge. Bastards. Condolences to those affected by the incident; nobody should have loved ones taken from them.

I do feel very sorry for the families of the soldiers but I can't help but feeling like as a soldier it is kinda what you sign up for. to murder and be murdered. You can say soldiers are heroes for protecting their country, you can also say that there would be no wars if nobody was willing to fight them. Soldiers are no true heroes or if they are the Taliban
that shot them down are also heroes

Really not trying to be a dick but I can only assume you posted this to be discussed.

It's war, people die. More people from the opposing faction die and no-one seems to give a shit.

*Points to avatar referencing the horror of war.

Death is Death.
It's all tragic, and this is the largest single attack on US troops in the Afghan conflict.
And one of them was a civilian.

Let's be honest here, this would be much larger news if it was a terrorist attack from the outcomes of war.

Murder and serial killings are COMPLETELY different than war. Murderers and serial killers mostly target innocent people.

These were soldiers, not innocent civilians. Death is part of a soldier's job description.

It's war, people signed up to kill and be killed, this is just part of the process.
To me it's only tragic when civilians get involved, i.e. Oslo is worse, far far worse.

...

Well, fuck.

30 SEALs dead. Over a year of grueling military training, just to be killed in a damn helicopter crash. And shot down by an RPG? Since when are the Taliban accurate enough to kill aircraft with those things?

This sucks. A lot.
