Fact is they don't want it to seem like they are forgiving for what is undoubtedly copyright infringement, in the potential case that someone takes on a project with more serious implications, thinking "Sony probably won't care". It's a big company thing that isn't just down to Sony.
Also, when not actively protecting your copyrights, you stand the chance to actually lose them I think. This is in place to make sure someone can not make a successful product which you can then sue when it is making money as a corporate strategy. You have to react the moment you are aware.
