3D, just a fad?

I certainly hope 3D is a fad...it gives me headaches, and makes me feel a bit nauseous. I actually haven't been going to the movie theaters as often as I used to, because almost everything is in 3D now, and only have a few showings of the non-3D versions a day. Well, ok, that, and the fact that I have no money.

Wow, so many seem to be against it.

Also hoping it's just a fad seems somewhat counterproductive. Don't you guys want technology to advance? 3D-televisions are still a somewhat technical feat because of requiring double the update rate (one for each eye) and polarization of the light etc.

Sure, it might seem like a gimmick but all new advances might seem like that. You guys are just used to how things are now and seem quite afraid of change.

I say yes, it IS a fad--it happened years ago with Jaws in 3-D, and one of the Nightmare on Elm Street flicks following soon after, along with an Amityville movie.

Treating these newest flicks as if they are some innovating technical feat is silly, 3-D movies have been around for decades and "filmmakers" now are simply riding the Avatar wave. It'll die off, once again, soon enough.

Note: I'm neither against or for the format--I saw the older movies back when they were released, and thought they were "cool" for being in 3-D, but I don't really care one way or the other if a movie I want to see is filmed that way.

Meh, i dont even watch 3d in the theaters any more, seems excessive until movie makers actually start to do a good job with it

Well they are starting to test holographic TV as a potential for the masses, I think that would be more viable...
Holographic TV is something I badly want to see, would be a lot better.

Plus I wouldn't rant about it that much :D
Holographic TV... Now THAT would be nice.

That said, this specific "technique" has been around for a decade or two at least, which makes this hilarious. They're actually trying to sell you old tech as new. It didn't work the first time (for all the aforementioned issues in the OP, and mode), I don't think it'll work now.

Maybe they'll try again in another 10-20 years.

i dread the fact they spent so much time creating something so flawed. there are so many other things that should be focused on in the entertainment-part of science.
Well, given enough time to develop it, I can't see how it's flawed. And I'm sure there is focus on more than just 3D.

I understand what you're saying. I'm just not sure it utilizes the same technology. In either case I still think it pushes technological advances, though ; )

I agree with you in that I, too, don't really see the advantages of 3D; to me its just a gimmick, but I do think that it will only grow in popularity over the next few years. Unfortunately.

Don't see the point. I recently upgraded from a big CRT TV to an HD one and the image had gone from a flat 2D image to being able to distingush each layer of background (ie. can tell if a wall is front of a mountain and which layer is closer)

3D just confuses me because I forget it is 3D and when something comes out of screen I get distracted and forget what I was doing.

I believe it is sort of a fad but much like the iPhone, it is a fad that is going to last and remain very popular. It's actually kind of retro because after all back in the fifties a lot of movies had 3D because it was an easy way to make a cheap thrill. Nowadays, what with television and illegal downloading, it seems like 3D is being used to real people back into theatres with a great cinematic experiance.
So naturally, TV is getting hooked up to this as well and so are video games. So what might have begun as just a gimmick could end up being the social norm, who knows.

I hope not.

I'm hoping enough morons buy them so retailers drop the price of plasmas/LCDs.

I'm still using flatscreen CRTs FFS. Need monies!
Yeah I'm in the same boat, I still have curved CRTS.....

I'm really going to take advantage of these 3D TVs by buying a HD one.

I've seen only one 3D film and that was enough. Since Avatar was supposed to be the best 3D think out there, then I'm not impressed. Ofcource Avatar looked good, but the 3D was just for show, it wasn't a vital part of the film.

And the glasses suck. I mean all the great advancements in technology haven't really required any individual piece of equipment from everyone to use. Someone might say that videogames do, but since it's an interactive media, you need something to interact with.

I mean think about it. What if you would have to wear a technologically advanced sombrero to watch a colour television? Or wear a pair of special shoes to listen to the radio? Would that work?

I really don't like it but I think they're going to keep pushing it to sell more TVs and try and curb piracy.

When I think about it there are just too many disadvantages for 3D to make up for the one sole advantage: Firstly, you need glasses. This screws it up for people with sight problems and for people that occasionally loose small objects, not to mention people large parties of people will need to shell out for their own glasses or suffer weird blurry images. Secondly, it really does hurt your head. I've been playing games all my life and rarely suffer from headaches and eye problems, but after using 3D on both my computer and in the focus group my head has exploded in pain. Finally there is the cost: to have 3D on your TV you need a HD3D TV, subscription to Sky and the glasses or for your computer you need a special monitor, a receiver and again the glasses. I don't see thousands of people shelling out this kind of money which really does beckon the question: Is 3d just a fad?

Sorry for the long wall of text and the fact its a bit on the British side but what do you think of 3D? Have you tried it and loved it? Or do you think it's going to crash and burn?
People said HD was a fad when that first emerged. Uptake was slow, but now with consoles and Sky HD it's really picking up. The same will happen with 3D. The tech will improve, the price will come down. A few people will buy 3D stuff, then it will pick up. It will take longer than HD though.
