Hey, I am looking to create a pixel animation and would like to have a 3D model to reference my characters off of. Just looking for something that I can get the body gestures and such. Much like those art mannequin sketch dummy dolls, but a software version of it. Any such program?

Poser is pretty much exactly that. [http://poser.smithmicro.com/] It has a few default models and poses and you can adjust each bone and joint individually. You can also control lighting, clothing, and hair, and import other models to fill out a scene.

I'm not aware of any freeware equivalents, but there are plenty of free sites with various static poses online. I don't know of any that let you control the model, though.

You can find older versions for like $30 on Amazon or other online retailers from time to time. The latest version is usually really expensive, but if all you want to do is pose a character you probably don't need all the newest features. I believe they have trials for all their software, too, if you want to try it out and see if it's what you're looking for.

Would you recommend mangaStudio?

I find Manga Studio 3D environment (both MS4 and MS5) really hard to navigate around. It's not as smooth as Poser where you can grab a joint and pull it in the direction of your liking.

Edit: Try XNA Lara. It has models of video games characters and is free/easy to use.

Gmod, its on sale right now for 2$ or something.

Its a fun game and you can easily do poses in it (its probably the most casual thing you can use to do poses in, no weird new user interface that you need to slowly learn)

You can also probably find a simple dummy model since the game is loaded with community made stuff

If you're just looking for some quick *free* 3D models of the most common poses, you can go to posemaniacs [http://www.posemaniacs.com/].
They also have a viewer for their poses where you can rotate them.

Manga Studio is good if you're putting together a comic instead of an animation, but if you just want reference poses then you'd be better off with Poser. Manga Studio's 3D is pretty limited in comparison, though they did integrate some of Poser's posing abilities in MS5 with a bunch of common manga poses.
