People seem to be taking this the wrong way - they never said it would have the graphical capabilities of the two consoles - just that it would have the same type of horsepower; specifically for the 3D element.

Besides, seeing as how the source was named as "anonymous developers" who knows how true this actually is?

How many Processors does the PS3 have again? Seriously, it's like 8 or 6 right?

Until it's reveal, I BELIEVE IN MIRACLES!

You never know, Calumon. They could make a sequel to Luigi's mansion.
Yeah, and i could become President....

I can't wait to play 4 seconds of that thing, and then recharging.

I would imagine it would look something along the lines of this: http://www.shitcandy.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/xbox-360-laptop-mk2-top.jpg

I seriously doubt that those claims are true.

Considering that Nintendo rarely focuses its time/money/effort on beefier power, it seems very un-Nintendo-ish to do such a thing.

In fact, one could say that Nintendo is most commercially successful when they focus on innovation (or gimmicks, depending on the console/perception) rather than power - the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Wii, etc, are all out-classed in terms of power when it comes to competition, yet all said consoles have sold bucket loads - compare that to consoles like the N64, and one can see a correlation between lack of power (and price), and sale figures.

Heck, I'd be surprised if the 3DS turned out be more powerful/graphically capable than the PSP! (though, not that surprised, naturally)

I'm guessing they were misquoted and they actually meant the PS2 and XBOX instead of the PS3 and XBOX360. Given how they view the iPhone as a threat, my money is on the 3DS having a processor speed equal to or slightly above the current iPhone generation, which would make the 3DS more powerful then the PS2, XBOX, PSP and Wii.

To be honest if they could come up with a portable gaming console with specs something around that range and with decent screen resolution, I'd be lining up to buy it seeing as I love my portable consoles.

I don't think they meant that the graphics themselves would be as powerful as the PS3/360. I think they meant that the engine behind all of this tech would have to be powerful for the 3D aspect.

I still have am not convinced that this is a good idea.

What? Really?

I think Nintendo expect people to be sceptical until they finally show it, and blow our brains out with the sheer awesomeness.... or lose all their fans by lying as badly as this...

I think it is quite possible. Why?
Gaming laptops today have GPUs that can far exceed the processing power of the 360. If I recall correctly, the gpu in the 360 is about the same as a nvidia 7800. Or something like that.

That is about the size of a laptop gpu.
All you need now is the CPU, some RAM chips and all the other necessary elements that make up a circuit board, and I do believe it could be as small as the DSi, maybe a bit bigger.

There is one thing with my claim that worries me. That laptop gpu right there has that big ass heatsink on it. Heatsink + handheld = My fingers are gonna be hot.

EDIT

Another thing that should be noted.
To provide stereoscopic 3D effects the system must have the ability to render each game field twice, one for each of the player's eyes, a technique that will require significant horsepower to produce," claims the report.
They say nothing about graphics. It just says it basically needs to create a copy of the game being played and show it at the same time.
Power =/= graphic capabilities

Bullsh*t - unless it's huge, there is no way to cool something that powerful plus having to render a game that looks like ass twice isn't hard, so claiming 3d = power is sheer idiocy.
maybe it's good hardware with low clock speeds? That will cut a lot of the heat right there I think

Still don't really get the "3DS" Thing, I mean I get the pun; but "DS" stands for Dual screen, so shouldn't "3DS" mean it has 3 dual screens, making it a 6 screen console?
That actually makes a lot of sense!
