I have been reading about this, I don't think they can legally brick your property. I think this will be along the same lines as with the Wii. An update can brick your Wii if you have homebrew on it but you have to choose to update.

Now, if the 3DS updates itself without asking permission, I think the lawsuits will start flying.

Gamers really should stop sending the message that "anything goes" where fighting piracy is concerned. Nintendo might be under the illusion that gamers will support nonsense like this.

I swear, this industry is shooting itself in the foot. Why do game companies put fighting pirates above the legitimate, paying customer?

Paying customers stand nothing to loose from this. so i don't see a problem. As for the "bricking" of the system, apple does the same thing to iphones, so this practice isn't new.

Why should you be angry about a policeman watching you masturbate?
that's different. I wasn't planning on masturbating with my DS.
But if you're not doing anything wrong and any information the policeman takes down is only going to be archived, not sold to marketting companies or whatever, why should you care if he watches as long as he doesn't make lewd comments or try to lend you a hand?

I don't like this, not one bit. I don't like a company watching my every move, ever. While its true that piracy is a problem, this is not the solution. This is just a large scale DRM power play, and as we've seen in EVERY SINGLE CASE THAT DRM HAS BEEN USED, it will prove ineffective to fighting piracy, and will only annoy/hinder legitimate customers. Pirates will hack the thing so that it can no longer connect online which will stop it from updating and they will pirate away.

There are Wi-Fi hotspots all over. Your 3DS may (I don't know for sure) connect to McDonalds wi-fi hotspot without your knowledge.
Ha! I live quite a distance away from town, in the park area and the closest Fast Food Resteraunt is some miles away. And I'd probably leave my DS home if I went to a fast food place or game store or Wal Mart.

I'd just take my PSP for listening to music.

Breach of privacy, too much corporate power, blurring the line between government law and corporate licensing 'rules'... any of these concerning to you?

Yes, if your palm is on your face you're doing it wrong... Unless you're a dickface, I guess.

You better hope that if any of your neighbours have wifi they've at least bothered to secure it, then.
They must have. Out of boredom I've tested my PS3, DS and PSP's wifi and they can't connect.

Well, call me crazy, but I think I trust Nintendo not to completely fuck up my hardware for no reason, AND don't think they're just waiting for the most arbitrary chance to shut down my DS just to make me buy a new one.

Not every new way a company secures its products is a mass-conspiracy against its customers. At least that's what I believe.

Sounds good to me since I have no plans of pirating any games for it.

Okay, so the anger is because of what? Your pirated games can no longer be played on a 3DS and that is bad because? So, Nintendo putting in patches for you just in case a game does not play well or comes bugged for some reason is "bad"? Are they limiting the games you play? Well, yes by only buying a legit copy can you play without any issues. In "very" good detail I would like to see how this is in anyway as bad as DRM? Does the 3DS prevent you from playing a friends copy of a game? To my knowledge it does not. Do you have to be on the internet to play a 3DS game? No again.

So, to my own point of view, my OWN point of view the "fact" that people are getting angry over the option to play an illegal copy of a game will be difficult or impossible to do on a 3DS. So pirating is "good" and getting "updates" that could improve or add features to your 3DS so your not left out is "bad". Wow, talk about backwards standards.

Less arguing and more information on a detailed account on why this is bad. If not, than your angry because you cannot play an illegal copy of a game.

P.S. What exactly about information gathering are they "paranoid" about? Is this the age again where people are like, "OMG. This computing device will record my information on where I have been and done. It must be there for big business can record my information to sell." If your THIS afraid, you shouldn't even be on the internet anymore. Aka, you shouldn't be reading this P.A.

There really isn't any property infringement here, sure what you do IS recorded, but just so a machine can take automated action, no people are actually going to see it.

I used to teach my neighbours to secure their networks the hard way. Anytime I found an unsecured wifi network I'd connect to it, get into the modem controls and reset the modem.

I'm fine with this. If Nintendo gets information about what games I like, they can make more of them. Then I get more games I like.

No.

Why is everyone that "fully supports" this, either says something like.. "If you're not doing anything wrong.." or "You must be a criminal if you disagree"..

Most people have their ear to the ground on this one, but I guess a lot of people don't. It's pretty simple, a lot of people are tired of corporate tomfoolery involving mistrust or spying. The majority of people are dissatisfied with how their government mistreats them or mishandles their taxes, etc. So when corporations start "blending in" with the game, people are usually going to throw up their arms in frustration by default.

You're basically throwing money at these people, and in return, you're graced with a tremendous amount of mistrust and, quite literally, you are spied on.

If you're just looking at all of this with a narrow-view, then you're doing it wrong.

It's not paranoia anymore if a company says, "You give us money, and then we are going to spy on you." However, Nintendo is obviously farming select biometric data for alien abductions, I know this because the people from Mars told me so.

It's a bit far and I don't have any interest whatsoever in the 3DS, but I don't really mind. I only pirate games that aren't being sold new at retail stores anymore, and I have a DSi for my GBA roms.

I am sure a lot of legitimate customers are re-thinking their pre-orders right now (or will be when they read this piece of news).
As a legitimate customer who not only pre-ordered but actually paid for the system a month in advance in full, I am still happy with my pre-order as is.
