So, I have a few hundred to spend and I either want to get a 3DS with Super Mario 3D Land and Ocarina of Time or a GTX 550 ti and the PSU to push it. I am currently running a 9600gt.

Which is the better choice?

Of the two, I personally would take the graphics card, but it depends on what you spend more time doing.

Yeah, that's what I am leaning towards.

Yeah, I am always the one "driving" during travel so the only time I have to play a handheld is when I am at home... and why would you play a handheld when you could play a console or PC game? That's my logic anyway.

Well, in truth, the 3DS doesn't have the battery life to play anywhere but home..LOL

Like Loop said, it would depend on your personal choice. Although, truthfully, sounds like you put more time into PC gaming than you would a handheld if you bought one, so I'd take the graphics card.

Graphic card imo, and again DON'T BUY IT NOW. Kepler graphics architecture will come out in a couple of months, pushing the price down on current cards; and even if i do think ATI is a better value this generation, they too will be cheaper, so sit tight.

On the other hand if you go 3DS, you can buy it right now, AFAIK they are selling it at a loss, so it wont go down in a while.

I've enjoyed my 3DS so far, and it seems like they're coming out with some half decent games for it; it really depends how much of a Nintendo fanboy you are, can you cope with missing a handful of Nintendo titles until you have money again?

I have a 3DS, its alright, ocarina of time was fun to play again and I got Super Mario 3D land, i also have a couple of others. Currently non of my 3D games actually needed the 3d function, which makes my eyes go funny after looking at it for a while.

I would say get the graphics card but if you are quite keen on the 3DS wait for it to drop in price a bit and have more games (it will run DS games as well) released.

Have you actually bought the card yet? Just wondering because that might not be the best choice of card depending on the rest of your system specifications (NVIDIA cards can be throttled by weaker CPUs whereas ATI/AMD tend not to be effected as much).

....

Nvidia and AMD cards is being throttled the same.

If the cpu is running at 100% and its cpu lag then it will not help by either having a Nvidia or amd card since they cannot do anything for to help the cpu........

No, they aren't "being throttled the same". Here in the UK it's been quite well publicised that NVIDIA cards are more effected by CPU performance than their AMD/ATI competitors. Off the top of my head both Custom PC and PC Format have run articles stating as much, complete with benchmarks - there might well be digital copies online for you to check out yourself.

If you have an older/budget CPU it's probably best (though no essential of course) to go for an AMD/ATI card but anything else the choice is yours. Incidentally, both aforementioned magazines tend to favour NVIDIA in their reviews so a 550/560 might well be the better option... I have a GTX 480 myself.

Honestly until you show me a link to a site that verifies what you say Im going to call bullshit since gpu handles gpu stuff and cpu handles cpu so there is no reason to why nvidia should be more throttled then AMD and I have never ever heard anyone (except you of course) say that nvidia is more affect by a bad cpu then amd.

That is not completely true, depending on the game the phisics engine can run either on the CPU or GPU. As for the OP, i can't see why he would go for a GTX 550 TI over a HD 6790, there is no reason whatsoever to do that, but whatever.

Yes, it's installed now and running well.
