Firstly, Misleading title is super misleading.

Secondly; Mr. Iwata is wrong. While the 3D on the 3DS is not a pain to me, and I always play with the 3D on, it's just not important to gamers, at all. Its not that Gamers have short attention spans to care, its just that they've never cared at all.

Third though, the 3DS is an amazing handheld and I expect it to sell hundreds of millions of units in its life time. It's already at 17 Million, so I'll probably be correct.

Fourthly;

Can't tell if serious or not, but I am definitely buying a WiiU. I don't expect it to be an utter failure, I expect it to sell like mad, just like the Wii, DS, and 3DS did (The 3DS didn't really sell until the price cut, but the 3DS is Nintendo's best selling system on Launch Date, so, there's that). Don't expect the WiiU to be the end-all of Nintendo pal.

I like the 3D. It's a nice feature that doesn't hold development back, as the 3D effect is simple to implement. Once again I think Nintendo is failing to realize that it isn't the console, it is the lack of titles that hurts their market. Where was the Mario game at the release of the 3DS? Months behind. A best selling 1st-party game for your own console not there.

Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing should have been ready for the 3DS, backed up by plenty of 3rd-party games. They didn't again and it cost them.
Couldn't agree with you more. I love my 3DS, but I've had a handful of games reserved for over a year with no release date in sight. Give me some Animal Crossing, Professor Layton, and Paper Mario and I'll be happy.

Why don't they just admit they made a poor decision when it comes to features? Anyone with half a brain could see that 3D is a cheap gimmick that adds nothing to a game, and a fad that was quick to wear thin.

Heaven forbid I'm not interested in dishing out 150-250 dollars for a handheld device plus games. Thats right, blame the gamers, or more over the fact you guys thought that the 3D gimmic would be all over it, but said gamers wern't.

I only got this after there were several games out I wanted for it. The biggest issue for the system is still that there is not a lot of games that appeal to me. I loved the RE game though. So much so that I tracked down a circle pad pro, which made the game even better. I recently bought Theatrhythm Final Fantasy and am having quite a bit of fun. I mostly enjoy hearing songs from my favorite FF of all time, FF6.

Of course, no system should hinge on a gimmick. They should all hinge on the games. I hated the idea of a 3D system. But it was actually pretty good unless you moved around a lot while playing. I was pleasantly surprised by it. But games are all that matter. Not gimmicks. Also, price should be taken into account as that can be a big roadblock from people.

..."it makes graphics more impactful, it proves a sense of immersion that 2D doesn't have, so I would say generally that 3D is better than 2D."...
Here's the thing...3D graphics are perfectly fine for some things like cinematic cutscenes but like Yahtzee said months ago, what's the point of an easily broken visual effect on a console that also features motion control? I have loved using 3D sometimes like on Theatrythem's theater and, Zelda's opening bit before you start playing the game. Otherwise 3D wasn't really a necessary part of the system. The games look really good without after all and the clipping just takes you right out of the experience. Even if you can play with the 3D on, I can't be the only person whose eyes stop noticing the effect after prolonged play.

Hopefully this means the next upgrade after the 3DSXL will have a second stick instead of a second face-camera...or maybe remove the region locks.

I don't have a short attention span, Iwata-san. I just think 3D is bullshit and doesn't give a game any more immersion than motion controls or smacking me in the back of the head every time I decide to play a modded version of Smash Bros because it's better than vanilla brawl. What is it with Nintendo blaming customers for all their problems rather than accepting the fact that they may have made mistakes? Are the higher ups worried they'll have to commit ritualistic suicide because they didn't live up to the words they gave stockholders?

So, once again Nintendo has realized that the gimmick they promoted their system with is useless.

Remember when the DS came out and every game had some kind of touch-screen implement shoe-horned into the game, and later on, that wasn't the case? 3D is even more useless, because at least a touch screen can serve a purpose. I played the Kingdom Hearts 3D demo with the 3D turned off and completely forgot that it was off until I was done with the demo.

Also, it's awfully lame that the 3DS XL doesn't have a second circle-pad on it. Nintendo sure has dropped the ball left and right with this system.

Attaching a second analogue stick is possible but it would have made the system even bigger and, though it perhaps puts a burden on people that really want that second stick, it?s a call we had to make and these people will have to live with it.

Yeah, thanks a lot, asshole.

Ah good job putting that "attention span" part into his mouth.
Clearly, that is what he meant when he said that novelties, such as 3d, quickly wear off!
Yes, stating this fact must totally mean he is blaming gamers.
It practically means the same thing!

It's a good system. It updates the graphical power of the DS to something more in line with what the PSP had. Hell, I played with the 3D off for most of the OOT of time re-release and it still looked beautiful. It was fun to play early parts of the game in 3D, but the further in I got the more of a pain in the ass it became since I'm the kind of person who will tilt their handheld when really trying to beat the piss out of an enemy. Finding myself suddenly blind because my picture went all wonky from not being in the proper position started to get to me.

The claim of having to rigidly keep your head in a single position is something I don't really get. I played with the 3D on and was able to sit in quite a relaxed position while viewing the screen, but again I'm a tilter. (It makes me turn sharper in mario kart, but shh don't tell anyone)

I think this is a good stance for them to take, make 3D a feature that is there but isn't the core focus of the handheld. As for gamers having a short attention span when it comes to new things...yeah I'd believe it, but I don't think it's the reason why the 3DS saw such a lackluster release. I think the high price and wimpy release roster were to blame there.

Short attention span? No, I just don't like getting a headache from playing a video game, or having to keep my head perfectly still.

3D is a gimmick, it always has been and always will be.

I've never had that reaction, how close is the screen to your face?

OT: So, not supporting your flagship handheld at E3, not releasing any games that are worth a damn for it and then blaming your customers? Nice work EA, didn't see you come in.

but placing the blame for the handheld's lackluster performance on gamers' short attention spans isn't entirely fair.
A good point. Mind pointing out where in your source article he's quoted as saying that?

Yeah, keep telling yourself that. Everyone said the same thing with the wii, and look how well that turned out. People also said Sonys hand-held would finally topple Nintendo from the market because their system had such amazing graphics! Nope.. the 3DS might not be in the best spot, but it's sitting at the top of Olympus compared to the position the vita is in.

You can't really explain it away, its already known that it affects people differently, some people get headaches/eye pain from it, some get none. The same can be said of 3D movies.

I'm of opinion that if a significant amount of consumers get pain from simply playing a video game or watching a movie, then it's obviously a bad fucking product.

Good catch there, seems like a bizarrely random interpretation of Satoru's comments from the news poster here.

Oh I just love seeing these posts. My grin grows ever wider.

"A gimmick! A gimmick! My kingdom for a gimmick!" Nintendo will wail, while I laugh hysterically over the smoldering wreckage of cheap plastic and novelty du jour. I'll breath deep the smokey ruins of their once great company, drawn and quartered on the closing hinges of history books lined with raped franchises and beaten horses.

"Just one more mini game collection!" They'll plead. "One more casual sports game for grandma! Spare us and we promise to only remake Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda a dozen more times!" The casuals will simply ignore the cries, uninterested in laying down a few hundred dollars for a controller to a paperweight they've forgotten they own.

Nintendo turns to those they once loved--the taken for granted mistress, bruised and ashamed from years of abuse. "Hardcore, take me back! I've changed. I promise. Look, look! See," the flailing beast begs. "Look at all these five-year-old games from the other consoles I ported just for you. Look how hardcore I am now!" The long abused spouse finally turns her back and walks into the sunset, leaving the toppled prince to die alone, forgotten and mourned by no one. A relic of its time, now condemned to memory, just as with all those before it.

*Maniacal laughter*

I tried it in a store with super mario land, switched the 3D on and off and fought a very hard battle to see any notable difference. I think there might have been a bit more depth, and a bit more migraine on my part when 3D was on, but nothing of noteworthy importance.

Not impressed.
