I find it difficult to recommend being that I didn't enjoy it, but you sound as if you'd really like Gears of War. And from the fact that you like Hitman, I'd suggest trying out a few more "tactics" games, because from my understanding, Hitman is more stealth/tactics than TPS. The Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon games are a good place to start.

Oooh! Rogue Trooper if you can find it! It's based on the 2000AD comic Rogue Trooper and the plot such as it is, is fun if a little off at times.
Indeed it is awesome

Also, any of the MGS's if you dont mind lots of non shooty

The only one I like that I have not seen recommended is Eat Led The Return of Matt Hazard. You get to kill zombies with a squirt gun.

i saw that one at the store the other day.

Dark sector was really good and you can probably find it for like a penny now.
You already got MaxPayne 2 so you're good there.
I really liked splinter cell, but it's a lot more of that sneaky kind of stuff than shooting.

I don't know why everyone likes gears of war, it's a mediocre game with a gorilla's worth of hype behind it. The characters are so archetypal it's laughable and have about as much depth as a kiddy pool. Development of characters doesn't even happen, and honestly what there is isn't all that great. Cover, regen, shoot. Cover, regen, shoot. Do that for 10 hours then you're done, yay.

try the ratchet and clank series.
very satisfying
I concur, it sells itself as a platformer, but they really are more TPS games. Particularly the third one (Although that one often feels more like an arena shooter, don't know if that'd appeal to you).

Gears of War 1,2 both understand the definition of 'cinematic gaming' I'll give 'em that.
They also seem to understand gore quite well too.=)

Try RE (any will work, IF you are a flexible gamer), and the MGS series. But if you change your mind about fps games, try Black. Short and simple, but also gratifying as you blow shit to pieces.

If you like Hitman, then maybe you should try Freedom Fighters. It's a bit of an oldie, but it's made by the makers of Hitman, and has a really fun squad system. Those same people also made a TPS called Kane and Lynch, but I haven't played it, so I couldn't tell you if it's good or not.

If you got a PS2 or N64, track down Winback: Covert Operations. That was one of my favorite games back in the day and was a pretty good TPS. You can't run and shoot so it's a lot like resident evil in manner BUT it has a cover system equal to that of gears of war. I don't care what anyone says, Winback created the first good cover system I know of before Gears did. It is a bit of a stealth action game too as there's a lot of sneaking and whatnot. So it's kinda like MGS meets Gears, and there is NOTHING wrong with that.
Amen to that! Sadly its sucessor didn't hold up nearly as well.

Anyway, GTA 4 could be classified as a 3rd person shooter, but i would still check it out and its predecessors for some sandbox fun.

Gears of War 1 or 2. Number 1 has better singleplayer, but not much multiplayer value anymore, plus no horde or bots. Also with Gears one you miss out on awesome new features like the chainsaw duels.
