I think the internet is well aware of this connection and has been for quite some time.

Your point?
I would challenge that. I saw a post on the topic about the trailer for space marine basically decrying it for being the distillation of everything terrible about the genre "They've even called it Space Marine! How much more unoriginal can you get." I had to explain that Space Marines pre-date any of the pale bastards that dare take the name.

The same thing can be said that Star Craft looks a lot like Aliens vs. Predators... (To some degree... very loosely in fact.)

Gamers have this weird thing about games where being the 1st to do something is for some reason really important, whereas being a copy, even if a BETTER copy is somehow inferior.

The way I look at it, Starcraft takes a concept like tabletop gaming and makes it cheaper and user-friendly. And they were massively successful with it. Yeah, 40K came first, but 1st doesn't mean that you are the best.

Now I know that I'll get quite a bit of flak for this but I believe that Starcraft is a near carbon copy of Warhammer 40k. Just take a look.
The Starcraft creators have stated that they got some of their ideas from WH40k. It's been discussed quite a bit. I'm surprised most people don't know that.

First is the worst, second is the best. Not necessarily but it's been put to the test. And Starcraft is more fun than WH40k. Even though I play both.

You would be right. Starcraft is a copy of Warhammer 40k, as Blizzard had initially wanted to develop an IP based on WH40k.

I've never played 40K, and I'm not disparaging 40K, but it's undeniable that Starcraft has been the more successful IP.

Well, it isnt new. IIRC the starcraft team started working on a warhammer game before they split (for XYZ reason). Now even if they kinda look alike on the surface, they are both very much different both in lore and gameplay.

I love both. Warhammer 40k is a rich setting ( i use a ultramarine army, pretty solid) and the tabletop game is FUN. Starcraft is fun too and i like the storyline.
On a random note I think the Ultramarines are a little too over-used, not that they don't look cool or anything, don't get me wrong, it's just that they should use the Dark Angels or Imperial Fists, Space Wolves, Soul Drinkers, etc. Just to give a little more diversity instead of using one chapter of hundreds.
Never the Soul Drinkers! Never again. Yes I can maybe buy a renegade Space Marine Chapter that is still loyal to the Imperium. But they also worship Chaos?? THE FUCK

OT: Yes, and there have been many arguments at the hobby shop where I preside in all of my free time.

Edit: Sorry about that, guess I need to go reread the novel and not skip a whole bunch of shit this time. :/

Erm, what? You're challenging what exactly? I never said anything about who was first or anything about Space Marine or the originally of either title. I was merely pointing out that this thread has been done to death and is pretty pointless.

I disagree. Starcraft games are a bigger deal than 40K games, however the 40K IP is a much greater success than the Starcraft one.

40K novels makes it into best seller lists, 40K has moved beyond the RTS genre, the tabletop game and RPG books are very successful.

Sure, Starcraft is a much bigger franchise than its direct competitor, Dawn Of War, but it is by no mean the more successful IP.

Full disclosure though, I don't really care for Starcraft that much and I am a massive 40K fanboy. My judgement may be clouded.

Saying one is worse than the other due to lore or whatever means that you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Both have books, both are fairly deep, and seeing as Warhammer 40,000 was created in the 80's, they kind of have a head start. I find the Starcraft lore to be quite intersting, as well as the Warhammer 40k lore.

Also, Dawn of War and Starcraft are both great games. This time, however, Starcraft has a several year headstart and DoW's mechanics are very different. Not entirely, but if you've played the games you know how they're different. If not, look it up. Or ask.

There's a reason why Starcraft appears to be a carbon copy of 40k, as stated, that would be because Starcraft was originally meant to be a 40k game which GW pulled the plug on. Blizz changed just enough to avoid copyright issues and released it anyway, hence the racial similarities.
Starcraft has a really shitty lore compared to 40k however

You mean you didn't already know that this is true? Starcraft was originally a 40k game. At least, that's the apocryphal story that comes up every time this is mentioned. Plus there's also the fact that 40k started around the 80's.

this is a neutral arguement in the way I'm presenting it.
I laughed.

Who cares who got inspired from who? What, are you jealous that Starcraft is popular? That's a great, adult way of thinking right there, amirite?

I'm a big fan of Starcraft, but I'm only familiar with 40k through Dawn of War 2, which I loved. They can both co-exist peacefully, don't you think? It's not Pepsi vs. Cola. Chances are, if you like one game you probably like the other as well, extremely different though they may be.
