Solve the brackets first, then you multiply, then you divide.
48÷2(9+3)
(9+3)=12
2*12=24
48/24=2
It's 2.

So, I don't think you should have been the one to post that picture.

No intended offence.
I'm sure we've had this but different mnemonics give different results. Since in the Uk it's generally taught as BODMAS, i.e gives division priority over multiplication and others it's the opther way around... this is because multiplication has equal priority to division.

its 2

BIDMAS
Brackets (or parentesis)
Indents (to the power of's like Squared)
Devision
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction

is it boils down to 48/24=2

48/2*(9+3)
= 48/2*(12)
=24*12
=288

I guess some people were counting the 2 as part of the bracket. I reckon this is the way to do it.

right to left does not count when using Brackets, they just go 1st no exceptions
Did I claim otherwise? No. The question was not about wether or not brackets go first.

Stuff in brackets = 9+3=12
brackets and outside = 12*2 = 24
The rest = 48/24 = 2

I know I'm wrong, that's just how I was taught it.

i think the thing is that everyone is taught slightly different ways.

see i was taught bedmas which is brackets. then exponents. then times and divide from left to right then add subtract left to right. even if its not left to right its divide first then multiple.

so under that its 288

Seriously? That's like third grade stuff right there!Second grade even!

It's 2. No other answer is true or acceptable in any form or way.

How you people even pass math if you can't solve this. And I'm not trying to be a douche or anything , but this simply amazes me !

Am I the only one that was taught BODMAS?
Brackets
OPPERATIONS
Div
Mult
Add
Sub

The difference being that opperations then covers sin, cos, log etc rather than just powers.

This gist of the argument seems to be whether the 2 in "2(x*y)" is considered part of brackets or not. Personally I would consider "2(x*y)" to be covered under brackets. "2 * (x*y)" would be multiplication.

As others have said though, it is simply ambiguous notation. I think XKCD said it best - (paraphrasing because our filter blocks xkcd) "Communicating ambiguously then acting smug when you are misunderstood is not clever." or some such. The comic also suggests an appropriate punishment for the crime.

I get 288 when I solve it, which is apparently what you get using the "standard order of operations". I use BIMDAS. You guys and your weird acronyms. My graphics calculator agrees with me. And that thing is smarter than me. It can run tetris... But yeah, the whole equation is retarded. What the hell is with that division symbol? I haven't seen that in years.
EDIT: What's actually amusing is the amount of responses saying "How do you even get [2 or 288] after passing 3rd grade maths?". The point is the equation is ambiguous. There really isn't a right answer. Stop calling people idiots. I can't take the irony.

Yes indeed, it's amazing how wrong (and proud of it) you are.

Multiplications and Diversions have to be interpreted from left to right, otherwise any computer would get confused with longer equations. Try something like 4/3*(2+1)/5 and then what?

so 288 is the correct answer. Any math software including google and wolfram alpha tell the same.

Here's one answer:

Here's my answer. The question is ambiguous. It isn't a maths problem, its a symbolic language parsing problem. The solution you get depends on your parsing algorithm, and not on any fundamental understanding of maths. Maths is fundamental, the language system used to express it is arbitrary and, if poorly designed, fallible.

Edit: this thread also nicely illustrates how people reply to threads without reading the other replies first.

[HEADING=2]Please Read my solution[/HEADING]
48÷2(9+3)
=48÷2*(9+3)
=48÷2*12
(which is the same as 48*12÷2 as multiplication and division are of equal priority)
=576÷2
=288
The mistake made which results in finding 2 is that you assume that the (9+3) is multiplied with the 2 either because it is in a bracket or because they are reading it like (2(9+3)). You only solve whats within the bracket first after that the bracket goes removing any priority.

here is a nice way to show it, if you write 48*0.5(9+3) as ÷2 = *0.5 you can see that
48÷2(9+3)
=48÷2*(9+3)
=48*0.5*(9+3)
=48*0.5(12)
=48*6
=288

I've made a habit of asking more INTERESTING mathematics questions every-time someone tries to troll with this shit. So here we go!

If the average length of a car is 5.5 metres and the circumference of Earth is approximately 40,050km then how many cars would fit in a line of cars bumper to bumper right around the world?

Yay! See? Much more interesting. And as someone pointed out earlier, no I don't ask Mathematics questions to make people feel dumb. Mathematics is fun people.
Is the answer 7281818?
YES! See how much more interesting that question is than some silly trollish order of operations question? Yay!

It's 2. Order of Operations are Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication/Division, Addition/Subtraction. PEMDAS for short. There is also the alternative BODMAS.
48/2(9+3)
2(9+3)
2(12)=24
48/24=2

EDIT: In the Order of Operations listed above it states that parenthesis come first, NOT division therefore 288 is incorrect as are any other answers. If the answer was 288 than the equation would be (48/2)*(9+3).

4/3*(2+1)/5 isn't hard at all. It's 0,79(or 0,78 depending on how many numbers you take from the repeating decimal)
