4chan's community have actaully caught real criminals, and solved crimes. They have helped to police on many occasions to locate members of their site who have broken the law. They've caught people who harm animals, and they have done many other things to help society. While it's true that many of them are trolls, there are still those who have a heart, and don't go there just to be assholes.

This doesn't surprise me, because I'm sure everyone can agree that WWII vets deserve respect.

4chan is always an interesting mix of sociopathic pranksters and crusaders for moral justice. And sometimes their actions are a mix of both, like with Jesse Slaughter. Should someone get sent harassing death threats even if they're freakin morons? Hmmm... probably not. But their actions didn't just generate lulz, it got a misguided as hell girl some mental help and got her incompetent parents in trouble. So 4chan's morality is always a tossup.

I'm pretty sure /b collectively flips a coin each day to see if they'll use their powers of anonymity and rudimentary hacking to either post porn on children's sites or help catch an animal abuser.

4chan isn't /b/... And /b/ isn't always bad. They're just... Well, they're just /b/. There's no other way to put it. They troll, they be nice, the troll while pretending to be nice, and they fuck cats.
Also, /v/ and /b/ are probably the WORST boards to judge 4chan by. I frequent on /a/ and it's usually pretty good. I've gone to /g/ and they helped me with computer problems. I go to /co/ every now and then to see what's up there. /vp/ is usually pretty funny to go on to. The bottom line is, they aren't bad...

They turned people in for animal abuse. They report crimes. They fight an evil cult that masquerades as a religion. Why is anyone surprised that anon could be nice to a man who deserves some respect?

People tend to automatically assume the worst of a group, especially one with such a... ahem... colorful history. Yeah, the denizens of 4chan have done good things, but let's not pretend they haven't also been roused to do some sick stuff too. They're the raw essence of the internet, sometimes swaying to the side of good & awesome and sometimes to the side of UNLIMITED POWAAAA.

That said, cool on them for doing this.

/b/ only attacks with terror and troll tactics to people they feel are irredeemable bastards (Jessi Slaughter threatened them all and did very stupid things online, every single animal abuser they've attacked abused puppies and kitties, etc.).

I dont like this type of thread because I support both 4chan and the Escapist.

Disregarding rules 1 and 2 (even though they were responsible for 4chan's original, now tarnished creativity), plenty of Escapees are going to remark upon 4chan in an unintelligent manner. In fact, the more I read these comments, the more they sound like chan speak. Allow me to just tell you: I don't like the language one bit (except inside 4chan, a realm in itself).

There should be a 4chan dedicated thread where the latest discussions of this type go, and everyone in there outta be restrained.

Well, 4chan is known for tracking down paedophiles and animal abusers, they have even created a special group to fight the Church Of Happyology. They're not evil, they're Always Chaotic - whether Chaotic Good, Neutral, or Evil depends on a day.

This aids my hypothesis.

\b\ is a microcosm of humanity, all of it's bile and disgusting thoughts. BUt jut liike real life, behind all the porn and name calling there is some good in there, just really well hidden. Kind of like when someone paid a guy's rent for a month, someone he never even knew and never will know.

4-Chan is a direct representation of the world, warts and all.

This hypothesis makes a lot of sense. I think i saw someone else thinking along the same lines.
