I enjoy the /tg/ board, because they have the awesome 1d4chan spinoff wiki.
YES.

Some of those archived stories are amazing.

The whole '4chan is the dross pit of the internet' is mostly due the public perception of /b/ and other boards of a similar ilk. There is some amazing content on 4chan, even especially on the likes of /b/.

As others have said, there are moments of pure brilliance on 4chan you just don't get when people have a reputation to uphold. The ridiculous arguments and some people's inability to understand that their opinion isn't fact can get aggravating, but it fills a niche and some boards are fairly welcoming. Just don't go on /v/ /vg/ or /vp/ without expecting occasional porn, because rule 34 is an all consuming monster.

Basically, if you don't get mad at random people on the internet and are OK with occasional pictures that destroy your childhood, it's a great place to get a feel of how people think and why. Hell, there are fairly regular high quality threads on /b/ but 90% of /b/ lives up to the reputation most outsiders have.

EDIT: To make the point, I just had a discussion on /v/ about the benefits and drawbacks of the planned Xbone online checkin. People on both sides put forward interesting points and the blind hate was minimal. It was quite interesting.

Funny, I thought it was more the 'scum' than the 'villainy'. Some people wouldn't know proper evil if it hit them in the face. Still, ya want an anecdote about 4chan? Haven't been there. Much like No Mutants Allowed, I don't go to places that I'm not going to enjoy.

I enjoy reading about their bizarre raids and silly stuff, but the more malicious crap that happens just puts me off the community as a whole.

1d4chan is totally awesome though, loved reading the Grendel and Kharne pages!

Sneaky 4chan raid reference?

It's a pack of funny, creative people.

Who I will never step within a 50 foot radius of in my entire life for pretty much every other adjective that they can be described with.

Took you this long to find 4chan? Huh.

I've been browsing for years now, and frequented /b/ for much longer than I care to admit. I recently took to /v/, though clearly its nickname '/b/2.0' is... not grounded in falsehoods.

/tv/ is OK, though I don't go there often. I do, however, fully enjoy /h/, though that board moves slower than molasses.

Overall, I consider 4chan a bad habit, not unlike recreational drugs. Bad for you, socially unacceptable, and I don't know why I continue to do it. Even while I've been banned the past couple of days I'm still regularly checking /v/.

I'd say that you should just tell your friends "I don't mean /b/", since that'll easily raise their expectations.

Coincidentally, I've been to 4chan quite a few times over the years, but I rarely participate and mostly just engage in observation. I've almost never been to any board but /b/, since I haven't found any interest in any board on there for their advertised topic, I just go onto /b/ to see people being wacky and crude, oftentimes extremely so.

I don't know, there's some occasional enjoyment in such chaos.

4chan may very well be the overall arsehole of the innernet. And I'm not just thinking of /b/ when I say that. That site is a plethora of opinions no one cares about. And as we all know, a lot of opinions in the first place are uninformed and needless enough. Magnify that by 4chan standards. *shudders*

Just, don't rely TOO heavily on that site to help you make it through another day.

So, you actually think a mess like 4chan can be worthwhile? Well, let me tell you that while there can be some interesting discussions to be found there, it can get on your nerves pretty fast. Well, most of the time at least.

4chan basically has a few topics repeated ad nauseum:

Rate my pernus
Rate my [insert object here]
Racism
Sexism
Stories that obviously aren't true
Trolling
If you X then you will lose
One fandom bashing another
People bashing each other for no apparent reason

You're welcome, now you never have to go there

It has single-handedly made the internet a more boring place. It has spawned nothing but re-hashing of stuff that wasn't funny to begin with, and it's basically given a manual to the wannabe troll, whereas trolling used to be creative. When someone gets mad now, for instance, you reply by 4chan mandated standardized response: 'lol u mad'. Which is boring as all fuck. Fuck 4chan. Fuck everyone who goes there. All sub-chans, not just /b/.

"Pernus"? That's a new one on me. I used to know someone who said "Pennis", though, so I suppose that's not so outlandish by comparison.

Yes, 4chan is generally best observed from a long away away, often being little more than a cross between the therapy scene from A Clockwork Orange and the argument clinic from Monty Python.

Except that there are dozens of boards with diverse interests that are nothing like this. Seriously if you leave /b/, /pol/, /v/, and occasionally /mu/ the website is pretty great. My favorite boards are easily /tg/ because they are always so nice and they had some of the funniest threads last night regarding a counterfeit MtG debaccle, /an/ because it is literally 90% adorable pictures of dogs and cats, and /p/ because I've gotten some good photography advice from there in the past.

For me 4chan is what you get out of it, meaning if you stay on the negative boards you're going to get a negative impression.

Funny how I find this after just recently starting to checking out the Escapist again after jumping over to 4chan for a couple years. Some boards are better than others and thankfully my interests were of traditional games, thus allowing me a much better first impression of the website than others. Fun board games, art dumps, story times, the threads that take an unexpected turn to awesome. There are other boards I tend to browse as well, but in the end /tg/ is my home.

Oh sure there's shit all over the place (more condensed on some boards than others) but you have to quickly learn to just ignore that stuff. Not that that skill is a common feature on 4chan anyway. Ultimately the level of freedom allows it to go places that other websites simply wouldn't allow. And those places are certainly something.

Scum and villainy, huh? Even /b/ has something for everyone. Just a thread about their own shoes is a solid hour of entertainment (but it goes without saying: /b/ is NSFW). Still, there's everything from anime to urban explorers. Much of it is more pleasant to read than the average Facebook post.

I've been going to 4chan for all my needs for the past five, maybe six years. Maybe even longer. It gives me a laugh, makes me think, grosses me out, and has some good fap material.

Some of the best threads can be found on /b/, but they are far too often buried underneath a pile of shit 10 pages deep. Either that, or it's gone in 13 seconds because some asshole made ANOTHER You Laugh You Lose thread.

I do have to say, though, the whole thread filled with Men Laughing At Fruit Salad killed me. Another worth noting are the Rate My Band threads. I laugh so hard I cry every time I stumble upon one.

Altogether though? 4chan is a nice thing to do every so often. Like twice a month or something. Don't go on more than three times a week. After that, it's a little ridiculous. You start knowing things you shouldn't. Like porn star names, what goatsee is, what an anus looks like after rough anal sex, what it looks like when a woman sucks off a horse, how to make mustard gas, what a diseased vigina looks like, and how to make some of the best biscuits ever.
