4x games you would recommend that are newer?

Hmmm. There's a new game on Steam called Star Drive. The game started apparently as a tiny kickstarter project and I've been oblivious to it's existence, but it looks pretty great for a cheap project.
It's another grand strategy RTS and it appears to have complex ship designing so you might want to check it out.

In the vein of Masters of Orion, there's an iOS game, Starbase Orion. Pretty good portable game. You can customize ship loadouts from scratch, and the battles are represented by real time top down things you can choose to view that are very engrossing.

I know it's a bit late, but I'll second Star Ruler (and the "Galactic Armory" mod), the ship maker of that game alone has given me hours of entertainment.

I was thinking of getting star ruler before but wasn't sure since it's shipset count is soooo low, I wasn't sure I'd like it plus it sounded liked it needed a lot of mod support to be amazing which worried me ; (

Well if you have like $300M I imagine you could hire The Creative Assembly to design some RT space combat to go with Firaxis's 4X part.
