OK, someone help me out here.

What was SO great about Daniel Day Lewis' performance in "There Will Be Blood"? The man doesn't do too many movies and I tend to think his portrayal of Bill the Butcher in "Gangs of New York" was much better than the oil tycoon in "There Will Be Blood".

Hard to know where to start. It was just incredibly powerful, with a great sense of a sort of whirlwind of emotions being hidden under the exterior of the tough, businesslike oil baron.

In no order at all

Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight (hard to play a disturbed man so well, I'd imagine)
Robert Downey Jr. in A Scanner Darkly (ha, something different!)
Ian Mckellen in The Da Vinci Code (I really like his acting in that movie)
Michael Fassbender in X-Men: First Class (he is just awesome!)
Daniel Craig in Casino Royale (Finally, a Bond on the level of Sean Connery again!)

1 more, in TV:
Christopher Eccleston in Doctor Who (my favorite Doctor)

Such great acting, such an enjoyable movie to watch... and such a TERRIBLE ending. That film really pissed me off.
I know exactly what you mean! The third act rolled around and I just turned to my dog and asked "what just happened?"

I loved that movie and couldn't for the life of me understand why it was so poorly reviewed.
It was because the ending really came out of left field. We were watching a crime drama, and then all of a sudden we were watching an allegory on Ego. It made no sense and really wasn't connected to the rest of the film.

In Revolver's defense, I loved the movie up until the third act. Guy Ritchie is a genius, hands down.

Then maybe I was too mesmerized by both parts to notice the break or maybe I started making connections that may or may not have been there. Either way, it in no way deserved the kind of ratings it got compared to a lot of the crap that passes for "film" in theaters today. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather have 2/3 of a compelling film than 2 hours of mindless nonsense.

I'm gonna go with Daniel Day Lewis... in Gangs of New York!
Heath Ledger in Dark Knight, Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men, Ellen Burstyn in Requiem for a Dream, and Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad.

Yes, Breaking Bad is a television show. No, I don't care.

So 2000 counts? Because if it does then Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast. The man is a powerhouse.
Also from 2000 would be Eric Bana in Chopper.
Forest Whitaker in Last King of Scotland, but I like Forest in everything he does (except of course Battlefield Earth).
Toni Collette in Japanese Story.
and finally
Cate Blanchett in Coffee and Cigarettes.
