For me, none of that stuff matters. The only thing that will make me consider buying this game is if I can play it in third person view.

The whole point of RPGs is to trick out your dude to make him look awesome. Only letting the player look at a pair of hands is silly. And by third person I mean properly animated so that it's reasonable for someone to play the whole game in it.
You can play in third person... you always could in these games, and I can't help but feel that's not in fact the WHOLE point of the RPG genre... -_-
Yeah but they always looked rubbish. I hope Skyrim's looks decent.

Gearing is still a pretty big part.

But they're not allowing me to dual-wield shields! ;_;

Anyways, nice to see how quickly the topic got derailed by two games I couldn't care less about.

Its made by bethesda therefore there shall be many, many, bugs.

Thirdly spell crafting has been removed from the game.

Fourthmore (new word) F-cking dragons are NOT a new concept to video games so WTF are people all up in arms about them for?

Skyrim won't ever reach the heights of Myst or Riven, either.
This made me do a double take at first... but then I realized it's true.

Oblivion sold about six to seven million copies since its release in 2006. Myst, however, has sold EIGHT MILLION COPIES, which considering how it was A. 1992 or so, meaning there were MUCH fewer gamers around, and B. a freaking Point-n-Click adventure game, is a ridiculous achievement.

Riven didn't do as well, though, it sold "only" 2.5 million copies. (all figures are from VGChartz.

So, chances are that Skyrim will get overshadowed by Myst. I find this sad and amazing at the same time.

Can you give the hype a rest? Seriously, I'm as excited for Skyrim as the next guy, but stop nominating it for an Oscar and a Nobel before you've played it. You don't know if it's actually good. You just can't know that.

You don't happen to have written that blog, have you? Because I think advertising your stuff here is against the rules.

How? I haven't seen a single thing that hasn't done before. Sure they may be good, great even, but how are they "better"?

Dual-Wielding
And? It's a pretty need system in a first person game, but it surely isn't the top 5 (or 6) best things about the game. Or at least I hope it's not.

Graphics do not make a great game.

This has been promised time and time again. And all of them have failed to deliver. Why is Skyrim any different?

The dragon mechanic does seem interesting, but I can see it going pretty badly as well. What if after 10 hours they just become tedious when you just want to go on with your business? This is not the personal expectation of mine but the point is that we don't know.

Skyrim looks good, but that's all it has. The only Bethesda anything I've ever liked was Hunted: The Demon's Forge. So I have low hopes for Skyrim, even though I probably won't be getting it. Spending money on pre-ordering Assassin's Creed: Revelations, instead. Annnd personally, I would rather give GotY to Dark Souls. Buuut that's just me. If Demon's Souls can come outta nowhere and grab up 2009 GotY, I think Dark Souls can do the same.

A lot of games coming out in the next few months that I'm looking forward to. Skyrim, Old republic, Dungeon Defenders, Anno 2070. I hope they all sell well so the companies that make these games will make more games I enjoy, but whether or not they win some arbitrary reward means nothing to me. I just hope they all live up to the hype Ive built up in my head.

I don't like the idea of the GOTY awards. It depends so much on pre-release hype and the majority of the people who care about that stuff (360 gamers) that it's pretty meaningless. Everybody has their own personal game of the year. I think mine's going to be Saints Row The Third, a friend of mine is going for Skyrim, and another is going for Uncharted. You can't judge an overall game of the year, it just doesn't work.

*Facepalm again*

I'm sorry but this is just stupid, GOTY in general is stupid and it is even more stupid when it is for a game that hasn't even been released yet.

Also, Dragons? This is one thing I don't understand about the Skyrim hype.

What the fuck is so special about dragons? People are acting like Skyrim is the first ever game to include dragons. Oblivion was bland enough, now Bethesda have made the game even more fantasy #128462 by including dragons that don't seem special at all.

Also they said the game would have a more unique and fantasy style setting...well I haven't seen this at all in any of the videos released yet. Still as boring as Oblivion, the animations still look choppy, the combat looks just as dull as Oblivion and OMG duel weild? That has never been done before!!!!

Basic AI...was pretty crappy tbh.. You could make them go "What is this I dont even" by simply throwing fridges at them or by picking up a turret.
I just want to stop you here and point out that you are taking throwing a fucking fridge or picking up a giant metal turret as being something normal that completely human enemies shouldn't freak out about. Just saying, them "WTF!"ing is completely normal. (though, I played on hard and didn't have this problem)
Okay! I need to rephrase that! They dont react to it. None. They just patrol, do their scripted events or shoot at you. They dont change their behavior depending if you have pistol or sentry in your arms. They just stupidly charge into their deaths.

It was just very simple combat AI. Nothing like distracting guards with porn magazines, throwing rats at them or death by candybars.
So you never snuck around and opened a few doors that were closed to wait for the AI to notice and check out the room so you could get behind them and take them out? sounds like that is your issue, not the games.
Thats your highlight of the great AI? Checking doors that are left open? Good if they even barely made it thru the door way. The AI was very mediocre in its performance.

I dont really care about my privilege to choose between patrolling or combating enemy unit. Deus Ex let the story mold in the player's hands by the choices he made. You could prematurely kill bosses, characters, even to skip whole events and chapters, not just side quest, but important plot lines. And the game would react to this.
Fine, there wasn't enough change in the games story.

But did it really claim it would do that? No. You simply assumed that going in. That doesn't mean the game is "pretentious" it means you had high expectations.

"Pretentious" is a very scathing and slightly cliched word. Make sure you mean to use it.
The game is called Deus Ex:HR. The hardest difficulty is called "Give me Deus Ex". The games selling point was that you could make meaningful choises during the gameplay. There was none. Just sneaking game where you could go rampage.

You may not like the word, but thats the feeling I got from this game. On top that it was overhyped it was very VERY pretentious.

I'm tired of English countryside (this time should be Scandinavia countryside) fantasy medieval games injected with magic. There's just no end to them, somehow it pushed aside most of the other fantasy themes out of the way.
Quick question, What theme would you prefer?

To be honest I dislike the majority of the others so games such as this are fun for me.
Glance over the Thief Franchise. Here is a franchise that I adore, and if they can pull off a living world around you instead of missions - I would sacrifice my first born son to play it.

Pretentiousness is only there in the eye of the beholder. You're saying you had high expectations that Human Revolution didn't fulfill. I might say Braid is pretentious, but all that would mean is that I wasn't moved by the game's art style, mechanics or narrative structure. That word wouldn't be used properly.

Personally, I think HR accomplished everything it set out to do. You're all free to disagree, of course. You've got more player freedom than in Generic FPS No. 346, what little narrative choices you do make are meaningful, the world feels much more alive than anything Oblivion or Skyrim could ever dish out, and only thanks to the plethora of eBooks and emails to read - and the gameplay isn't terribly punishing if you're considering approaching Deus Ex as something other than a shooter.

It's an adaptive game. Seeing as the current standbys revolve around shooting guys in the face behind chest-high walls in brownish-gray locales while controlling a cross between a Mack truck and a football quarterback, I'm glad we've got Human Revolution around. It's not perfect by any stretch of the word, but what is there is pretty sweet.

As for Skyrim, it's probably going to be good, much in the same way I personally found that Fallout 3 was awesome, despite all the bugs. It's not everybody's game, however. It'll probably make it to Game of the Year on sales figures alone, but we all have to learn to step away from the hype machine.

You've watched the demo and you didn't find it appealing? Fine. There's several other titles coming out between now and the end of the fiscal year. I think we can all agree that the OP is being a little naive, but it's not like the opinion of a single blogger doubles as some sort of irrepressible command to go out and buy that thing.
