Im a loyal 360 owner. I bought my 360 with the impression that I wouldnt have to worry about the gremlins that had been plaguing my friends consoles. Then I got the three red lights. So I got my 360 repaired. Which was a fairly hassle free process. Then to my shock I got the red lights again.
Im curious, how many of you have had the three red lights, and if so, how often? Have any of you had it more then twice? please tell.

I'm on my third Xbox 360. My first one red ringed after about 5 or 6 months, and the second one scratched random games and dvds. Had my current console for 3 months now, with fingers crossed.

I think it all comes down to luck on whether or not you'll get a faulty Xbox. Then again, everyone I know who had one had theirs red ring within a month of mine doing so... Coincidence???

The horrors of the red rings are no match for what I had to go through.

My first 360 decided to through me a DRE with every disk i used. It started out with Assassin's Creed, and Halo 3 would simply freeze and crash, but slowly but surely it became useless. I was still under warranty at this point so I called it in, talked to a Lisa (Whose name I can guarantee is not fucking Lisa), scheduled a repair order and have them send me the box in what they would be a week.

Three weeks went by and no box.

I call again, a bit more annoyed (I was really polite the first time), and talked to Mike (Also not his real name), canceled the first order and made a new one, and this time I got the box, and sent it in. Now a little known fact about the repair orders for the 360 is that you typically just send in the console, not the hard drive. At first this didn't seem like a big deal, so I thought nothing of it.

In about month and a half I got a new console. Elated I plugged it in, popped in the hard drive, threw in Halo 3 and viola... It crashed... It got further along mind you, but it still crashed. Looking at the disc, aggravated, I noticed how terribly scratched it was and figured, because I got the Limited Edition, where so many of them came scratched and they offered a free return policy on these, I'd just return it and get a new one, easy fix yes? Ok so I tried another game, Assassin's Creed again and low and behold another DRE. I was tearing my hair out at this point. I cycled through all my games, and every last one (except for Tiger Woods 08, it was just horribly glitchy to the point of unplayability) gave me the same error. I experimented and found that all my games, with the exception of the damaged Halo 3 worked when the hard drive was taken out of the system. Great I discovered the problem and promptly called tech support.

A man named mark, who actually kind of sounded like he could be a Mark, answered the call, and I went on to explain things to him. I'm by no means computer illiterate, however he treated me as such and asked me questions which were clearly already answered in my explanation, and I was getting further annoyed, and a great deal more snippy. He put me on hold... for an hour and a half... and then he fucking hung up.

Outraged I called back (i got a different automated system this time, so I guess Marks damn shift was over...asshole) and who do I get? Lisa, Again, and I remember her because the first time I had to ask her to repeat every third sentence, This time I was screaming into the phone, "How fucking dare you hang up on me...blah blah" and nearly threw in some ethnic slurs I would surely regret. After RE-EXPLAINING the issue to her, and after being asked the same mundane questions, i was presented with a solution. Here's the kicker:

As per Microsoft's warranty, the 360 console is covered for about a year after the purchase. however the hard drive is only covered for ninety days. This entire issue started on day ninety-six...I was absolutely livid, and ended up having to buy a brand new hard drive.

And this is why, though I have a 360, I own and adore Apple products.

I've had it happen once but had it repaired in about a week. I did get it once more but tha was only becasue I plugged it in incorectly. It was fine when I stopped being an idiot and did it right.

So yeah, all up, only once.

My 360 has been in constant use usually 5 nights a week on average, sometimes up to 12 hours straight on weekends when I have friends over. Been in service since November 2006, no failures.

I'm on my third (Warranty exchanges all), but I've never had any red lights. I've had graphical corruption and freezing though.

Need an excuse to replace this one though, want one with HDMI.

Well it seems my xbox's hate me as the list of my problems it to long for comfort

I had three red lights sent it off got it back after two months with viva pinta for all of my complaining.
Then I had it where the lazier broke so it couldn't read any games. Got an extended warranty (I'm good at complaining.)
Red ring of Death again, this time they refused to give me anything.
Then there was something wrong with the bit the power cable plugs in to so I had to send it off again. Got a free controller.
Again with the disk read error. I asked for a PS3 to annoy them but got nothing unfortunately.
Most recently yet another Red Ring Of Death. Got this one back after 4 months believe it or not. Due to this very long wait i got: Four months xbox live gold cards, two wireless headsets and another year onto my warranty

So next time you think that your xbox is bad just think of what I have to go through.

I had trouble with my first 360, one with disk-munching (due to a loose power cord) and one with RRoD. The RRoD was over Christmas, but even then the console was back to me in exactly one week; it was waiting for me before I was back from visiting relatives.

I got the red lights once. I paid for the repair. Then Microsoft extended the warranty, and offered rebates to those who paid for the repair. I had to call 10 times over a period of 8 months to get my rebate check. It was a nightmare and if my current box dies outside of warranty, I'll probably just get a PS3 because I was treated so poorly by MS customer service.

ummmm hate to burst your bubble but both apple and microsoft run on the same hardware, both are ibm chips

i have a guy at work who is on his 7th xbox, not sure why he still says it's great after being sent in 7 times

when you send in your xbox for repair they grab one off the shelf in the repair facility and send it to you, so you will probly get stuck in the loop of having to get it repaired cause the new one is busted

honestly go to places like ebgames and get their extended warranty, you can just trade your old xbox in and get a new one

apple sucks because they lock everything up so hard, its easer to get inside a safe then it is to take apart a ipod.

microsoft dosent suck as much as they used to. they used to have a bigger problem with anti-trust laws, but now they are losing there grip on the top spots.

with so many xbox's cocking up. its a wonder y anyone gets one. i mean you wouldn't buy a tv that had like a 10% chance of being broke in the first 6 months. let alone after x amount of days/weeks.

crazy people.

Happened once. About 6-7 months in my 360 just went "blargh" and died. Got the box, mailed it. God it back within about a week and a half. Haven't had a problem since.

I think any issues with the 360 repair service probably comes from the Microsoft employees rather than the process itself, i.e. customer service reps that have no idea what they are talking about, repair guys that can fix the basic stuff but aren't experienced enough to find critical failures, and shipping morons.

Hm, so the real usage of an Xbox is to mail it to strangers in the hopes that they will mail it back with a few goodies for your effort.

i agree, anyone that has had to return it multiple times and still thinks it's great really needs their head checked, great they repaired it but shouldn't have had do

and the failure rate is well above 10%, it should be less than 1%

and as for the "repair" guys, they don't fix your console, they grab one off the shelf and ship it back to you, you don't get your xbox back, you get a different xbox

and as for the xbox ppl not knowing what they're talking about, the ppl who call in are just as bad if not worse

i had this type of call more than once

me: "unplug your router from the wall so there's no power going to it"
caller: "ok it is"
me: "ok we gotta wait 30 seconds"
caller: "ok"
me: "can you get to google?"
caller: "yes"
me: "ummmm i asked you to unplug the power cord for your router"
caller: "i did, it's that grey cable"

too many ppl think they know what they're talking about when calling support lines, few actually do, knowledge is a very dangerous thing in the wrong hands

I had my 360 since launch and I got my first RRoD on Christmas vacation, thats the only problem I've ever had. And I would buy that TV with the 10% failure rate if it was a really good TV that I would like, such as I love my 360. I do agree that they shouldn't have to repair it but the process wasn't a difficult one for me, It may be different for others, but mine was painless. And they do not just grab another one off the shelf... At least they didn't for me. I know because when I got my 360 I scratched some of the metallic plastic stuff off of the disc drive outside... thing... and when I got mine back that exact same metallic plastic stuff was still missing, so unless they took the time to exacto-knife that little piece off to make it look like my old one they didn't just grab another off the shelf. And just to throw this in, I've had far worse troubles with Sony support. Imagining the troubles I went through with my PSP makes me shudder.

Ive had my 360 for about, a year and a half now and have gotten 3 red lights twice, due to what can only be described as mechanical A.D.D. it forgets it broke and starts working again. Hooray for A.D.D.!

My 360 has actually been quite well behaved since its purchase which about august time, however I know that this is a very big problem amoungst some people. If you was to type red light into google im pretty sure more than 50% of the results would be about 360s.

The only advice that can be given about this is that you just have to make sure you 360 is insured that way at least you can receive compensation for your inconvinence and get your console repaired or replaced after things go wrong.

My pheory is that carrying out repares on a console does not work. I think that once they are broken they are broken, repairing them may seem like it has fixed the problem but you will probaly experience again, again and again.

I say, the solution is NOT to buy a PS3. The solution is treat it write and it will reward you by not breaking. Mine has a nice soft surface to sit on, with about 15 cm either side of it for its 3 fans to happily keep it cool for game time.

I have also heard many myths about the causes of a broken Xbox 360. (Myths meaning people say it causes damage but it hasnt been confiremed our suggnifcant evidence shown.)
Many say, if you unplug your 360 everytime you have finished using it, then plug it back in when you want to use it again you will eventually blow a fuse or something like that (these people who say this have NO intrest in the enviroment.)
Also using cheats, for games like GTA IV and Lost Plannet, I heard something about reprogramming here, (again something else that sounds false.)
