Yahoo posted a list of this. While the games they mentioned do deserve to be on a list (although I think that Everquest would be a better candidate than WoW) there are some GLARING omissions in my opinion, such as Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter 2, GTA3, Sims games, etc.

I agree with your editions except for sims. It was popular, yes, but only with a comparatively small niche in the entire video game market.

Oh yah, one more thing, Everquest sucked. That's probably why it isn't there.

Final Fantasy 1, Dune 2.

Especially Dune 2. the first EVER rts.

FIRST!!!!! Wow I've been on GR to long.

Yes, Yes, Yes, we can all argue about what game we think changed the world. Its an opinion. Dont post everything you have seen (alot of people use yahoo). Just think about what people will find interesting before you post. Thanks for sharing though.

I really don't see how GTA3 would make that list.. GTA3 only took the already successful first 3 real GTA games (GTA, GTA: 1969 London, GTA2) to third person view with sub-par graphics. Don't get me wrong, GTAIII is still my favourite out of all the GTA's.

I do and don't agree about the WOW vs EQ. I'm actually an EQ player and I don't like WOW it is just not for me. EQ did change a lot and started a lot of revolutions/evolutions in online gaming but when it comes down to the 2 games head to head, WOW for better or worse has effected a larger audience then EQ ever did. But then you could argue games like WOW and other MMORPGs wouldn't exist without EQ's first steps. But even then they were MMORPGs before EQ.

What is DDR doing there? I have yet to see one live, I've seen tens of schools in my country, none of them considered a game an alternative to dancing or anything.

WoW - Huh? Because it copied ideas from a lot of MMOs before, adding little to the genre, except for standard grind. Okay, it has 11 mln people. But half of that are Asians.

Wii Sports - the picture pretty much shows 1/3 of the 'players' - oldies that have enough strength to swing a remote at TV. With someone's help.

That list needs changing:
Ultima Online instead of WoW
Rock Band instead of Guitar Hero
Mario MUST be in there somewhere no questions asked
Real Time Strategies anyone?

WoW is there cause of the massive impact it caused in the MMO market and gaming market. WoW made MMO's popular and a viable gaming genre.

Yes there was MMO's before but none matched the impact of WoW. Not saying that WoW is the best and has revolutionary gameplay but its for sure the most popular and groundbreaking one in terms of media and user-friendlyness.

That's a BIT of an understatement. GTA1 + 2 are almost unrecognizable compared to GTA3. After GTA3 came out, "GTA 3 Clone" was used so commonly to describe games afterwards that it may as well have been added to the dictionary. I don't know of a lot of games that were considered GTA1 + 2 clones.

What revolutionary gameplay? You grind your ass till 80, just so you can grind some more. And there's always someone better who spends twice as much time per week as you do.

Wait, what? Comparatively small niche? Maybe if you don't count most of the people who played it as gamers (which would be silly). That game did fantastic.

You can't ignore the fact that GTA3 brought the open world sandbox genre to the mainstream view. I can tell you that nobody of note was ripping off GTA/GTA2 left and right.

Also, you seem to have ignored the change that a three dimensional world makes to the franchise. Hint: It was pretty big.

Without GH there would be no Rock Band, and Guitar Hero is a much more recognizable name than Rock Band is. Yes I know that the people behind Rock Band originally made Guitar Hero, but Harmonix would not have tried to make a game with an entire band ensemble had they not tested it with one instrument first.

Yeah last I checked, wasn't it the best selling PC game of all time?

Guitar Hero started the original craze.

This reminds me of how when you buy an atlas made in a certain country, that country is invariably bigger on the atlas than it actually is compared to everything else. We message board gamers exist in a niche, its easy to overlook just how many people played the Sims (because it's not 'hardcore' or something). The Sims was freaking huge.

As well as this, look at the number of games that use the "open world environment" since GTAIII. Before it, there were a few open world games out, but after they've become huge.

In my pile of games to my left, I'm estimating around half make use of open worlds, several of which are sequels to games that originally WEREN'T open world, including Burnout Paradise and Tony Hawk's games (Tony Hawk games technically always were open world but they've only in the last few years grown to link all levels together as one world).

However, the concept and popularity of an open world would've definitely boomed eventually without the huge success of GTAIII. Since developer are constantly striving for perfection, little is better than an open world full of people (exc Burnout Paradise), recognisable locations and landmarks, greenery and distinguishable scenery. You don't see huge neon arrows you can't pass through in real racing.

I'm not sure that list really matters...there are so many games that changed the landscape of gaming...actually, every game changes the world of gaming in its own way...be it a low-budget cash-in, or a high-budget blockbuster, or even a low-budget blockbuster.
