Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Guns n Roses, The Cult, The Smiths, Iron Maiden, Rick Astley, Faith No More, Lynyrd Skynyrd (technically because they reformed in 87), The Offspring, Pantera, Ozzy Osbourne, RHCP and ZZ Top.

Enjoy them.

Edit: Run DMC too! Gotta have some Run!

Check out Pixies. Particularly the album Doolittle, as it is my favorite by them.

Some examples

Electric Light Orchestra.

I can't stress that one enough. Of course, there's about a billion other good one-hit wonders out there with all the hair band and pop music.

What he said, although you cannot go wrong with Toto. Get Toto... and Duran Duran.

Skid Row, LA Guns, Cinderella, Warrant, Whitesnake, Dio, Tesla.

"you belong to the city" by glenn frey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZXLcPWKQyU you can't get anymore 80s than that.

I find solace in old music (As I pointed out in my thread "Classic Rock and Metal"). It's just so much better than current garbage.

The Cult, The Smiths, Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top aren't heavy metal either, more middle of the road rock.

Even thought they're also from the '70s, '90s, and now, U2 is pretty good. Other people touched on all the others.

Van Halen is always good pop-metal; 1984 and 5150 should be up your alley.

Michael Jackson's (especially 'Thriller'), Lionel Richie, Foreigner, Night Ranger, Roxy Music... I can go on.

huey lewis & the news. their first, self-titled album. before they became famous. it sounds like the record every indie-pop wannabe wishes they could make today. it is probably hard to track down but worth the effort.

I like the Pogues. They are the only band that I'm aware of who's whole career was in the 80's that I've liked.

AC/DC, Maiden, Metallica, Satriani, kreator, anthrax, testament, cold chisel, bryan adams, etc. There is a whole lot more but most of it isn't properly organized in my media player, I'll be back with edits as I realise I've left out important acts.

If you want to see a good diverse collection of 80's music, take a look at the sound track for GTA Vice City. I pirated the hell out of really enjoyed the music in that one. Def Leppard gets a retrospective gold star as well.

Perhaps you should tell us what bands you already have so that we don't become irrelevant.

Ahhhh 80's music, the music I listened to while still in the womb; Billy Idol, Whitesnake, Journey, Ozzie, Metallica, AC/DC. So many bands that I still listen to today even though a lot of my friends who are my age look at me funny when I bring them up.

Dear God I hate it when people do this.

Anywho, there's the Stone Roses, who released their debut in 1989. Very influential Indie Rock guys.

The Beastie Boys released a couple o' albums in the 80s, notably Paul's Boutique which is a landmark East Coat Hip-Hop album.

Then there's New Order (made from the remains of Joy Division) who do some incredible New-Wave/Synth-Pop/Alternative Rock albums in the 80s. Power, Corruption and Lies is cool.

The Field Mice make some nice Twee/Indie Pop.

And then there's Cocteau Twins which are a Dream-Pop/Shoegaze outfit.

And yes Roxy Music is a must.
