Kraftwerk - Autobahn - Inventers of techno's finest album
Not to be mean, but Autobahn's from 74. That's how ahead of the curve it was. Sadly, that's also why I didn't list is, as it's not technically 80's. The English version of Das Modell hit #1 in England in 82, though, so the later albums like Die Mensch-Maschine and Computerwelt sort of count.

Why yes, I speak German and am a Kraftwerk fan, how did you know?
A minor faux pas on my account, can you tell I can't speak French. I think I was thinking of Das Model TBH but thanks for the correction.

I have no idea how I forgot Def Leppard. Pyromania is awesome, and Hysteria is a masterpiece.

Heavy Metal is a form of rock, No?
No... it's a form of metal. It's in the bloody title.
eh hen?
Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music[1] that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in England and the United States.[2] With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo.[3]

Wikipedia...

Atleast someone agrees with me :)

Oh wow, just have to say this.

Heavy metal != metal. Heavy metal is a subgenre of rock and is the bridge between rock and metal. It is not a subgenre of metal; rather, it is a type of proto-metal. Don't expect to go finding palm-muted detuned power chords and sixteenth-note bass drum hammering in heavy metal. It simply isn't there.

Nobody's mentioned The Fall yet so I'm going to mention The Fall.

This Nation's Saving Grace by The Fall.

It will change the way you think about music.

I really like Helloween. It's like the foundation of power metal, and though it's cheesy, it doesn't take itself seriously at all...I think their later albums are very fun.

Also, if you want more delightfully cheesy light metal, try Gamma Ray.

I'm currently addicted to Dio's Rainbow in the Dark.

You may not like the heavier metal music, but the "hair/glam" metal from the 80s was top notch music, and really not that heavy. Really, it was like a forerunner to pop music, especially boy bands.

The thing with The Fall is that it's really not for everyone. I personally adore them (have all their records up to "Code: Selfish") but my wife and most of my friends can't stand them, but that makes me love them even more. I would say that "This Nation's Saving Grace" is a great way to start with The Fall, Grotesque is good for starters too. Oh and Mark E. Smith is GOD... somebody has to admit it.
