When 9/11 happened, I was 11. I didn't realize the severity of the attack until I saw footage of it with my father. Instead of making some hate filled thread about the terrorists or whatever religion they had, I'd just like to say,

Why?

Yes, of course the attackers were told about however many virgins they would have, but I would kill that many innocents for any amount of women, power or money. So what are your thoughts?
Thank you.

I think they did it because they thought they'd be rewarded with women... Not everything needs to be thought into too deeply.

And it really doesn't matter at all what you would or wouldn't do. You're not every person, are you?

EDIT: Wait, it's about why they did it. I think they did it because they thought they should sacrifice themselves to kill Americans any time they can. But I don't know for sure.

Hate makes the world go round.

Human life is too precious to bicker about who's philosophy is the right one. There's nothing more pathetic than persecuting someone who doesn't think the same way we do.

Hate.
Its the simplest and most accurate term i can give as an answer to why.
And its really as simple as that.

Ugh. Al Qaeda did not plan and execute 9/11 to get virgins. Please, stop with this misconception.

The real reason was because they hated America, what it stood for and what it did. The CIA called it a "blowback". You fuck around and put your hands in the cookie jar, your fingers are going to get bitten off. America has been pissing them off since the 60s and 70s. You can argue that America itself is the cause of 9/11 - they did in many ways fuck a lot of the Middle East over.

Al Qaeda also would of loved to start a conflict with the USA which it did achieve.

Think about what targets were hit. The World Trade Center. It was the symbol of American might and the success of Western society. It's pretty symbolic to destroy that.

It's not as simple as that. These men would have had years and years of conditioning and brainwashing.

It has been nine years, we can let it fade away now.
And they did it because they thought what they were doing was right, and they can believe what they want while I believe what I want.

Two reasons.

1) There are a lot of people who would kill innocents for women.

2) They are taught that these people are not innocent simply because they have different t beliefs.

Eh, whatever. I really don't care about politics or... news. It's just something that happened at some point in the past.

The reason why they did it really doesn't matter much to me.

There were a few reasons for the 9/11 attacks:

One was the U.S. bombings of civilian water supplies in the Muslim nation of Iraq in the 90's, as well as subsequent medical and food embargoes that caused the deaths of over 500,000 civilians.

Another was continued Western meddling in the Middle East since the Crusades.

The third, very related to the second, was "infidels" killing Muslims (in the form of military occupations and such)

They attacked a civilian target, and thus voided any right to sympathy that their reasons might otherwise lend, but I see legitimacy of the first two of those three reasons (and the third was basically just a religiously based rehash of the second). While I don't condone them attacking civilians, their reasons for hating the U.S. were not simplistic or invalid.

9 years since 9/11, 3 months since the last attempted attack in Times Square. 5 months from the jihadist who was in the army and that itself was only a few weeks after the bombing on the recruiting depot.

Becoming complacent and stupid isnt an option.

I think it's been 9 long years of it and I'm sick of it. More people died in the coming wars then who died in 9/11. Yes, people died and it was sad and I give my respects to them and their families, but a lot of other innocent people died during the Iraq War and we should have a day for them too.
I thought we did (Veteran's Day/Memorial Day?). I don't believe we give specific days to certain wars.

Plus, it was the first time since Pearl Harbor where America was attacked, it (like December 7th) is a day that will live in infamy forever.

Edit: Forgot OT part: They really hated us, if hate is present tragedies occur.

While its good material for making jokes, the 72 virgins thing probably played absolutely no part in their motivations. Its just simple use of religion and nationalism to convince them that someone is the enemy, they are evil and must die for there to be justice in the world. Same psychology that allows people to go to Afghanistan and Iraq and kill a far greater number of innocent men, women and children who have absolutely no association with the events that were used to start the war.
Why the hell did it cause a war against these two countries anyway? They were not acting on command of either of those countries' governments and weren't from either of them even. Fifteen of the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia, two from the United Arab Emirates, one from Egypt, and one from Lebanon.
The only relation was that American's terrible foreign policies towards Iraq in the past were pissing these people off, so they just escalated it to invasion as a solution I guess.

There are MANY reasons why...

Why did they attack the USS Cole in 2000? Why did 03911-000 try to blow up the WTC in 93?

Because they are extreamists and they hate America/Christians would be an oversimplification, but I'd also rather not start any arguments, so I'm going to leave it as "America=Bad, and therefore must DIE."

Religion is scapegoated far too often. If there was no religion you think such an event wouldn't have happened? They would have been like a host of other countries who don't fight in the name of religion - doing it for their country, or because they just don't give a fuck and have goals to achieve.

Religion just made it easier to have someone take their life to take others.

Which makes the posts concerning "hate" to be correct, but now people can know why, just as Kortney said above.

They did what they were told because they were trained to obey, like any soldier in an army.

It was hate.

They felt like they were being oppressed, they hated how we "push" our beliefs onto them, and many more things.

Not too long ago, a group of doctors, who just happened to work for a christian organization, went over to the Mid-East to help the wounded. All but one of that group was killed, and Al Qaeda's response was that the group "forced their beliefs onto them."

Is that a typo or are you saying you'd kill thousands of people?
