Well, what if the child was abused/ANYTHING ELSE THAT MAKES LITTLE KIDS SAD? With all the terrible shit going on in this world, glad to know we still have our priorities straight of "Fuck video games; everything is their fault."

Edit:fixed grammar

It's like Comlumbine all over again, the kids are psychotic, yet parents and psychologists blame Doom, even though they'd both never owned videogames.

This shit again? As if it wasn't enough to have Jack Thompson rush in to blame games shortly after the V-Tech massacre. I swear, people will take any and all chance to somehow push the blame on a modern day past-time, regardless of how insanely irrational they sound doing it.

Ok, violent video games that make you kill people made you kill yourself. I don't buy that for one second.

I would understand if it was a game to find the creative ways to commit suicide. But violent video games have nothing to do with him commiting suicide.

Did the kids parents split up? that's a reason. Does he have some disorder? They didn't explain it.

I'm surprised at this since it's more likely that TV caused this rather than video games. After all GTA sends a strong message that mob violence ain't worth it as a way to get to the top. By the way, did this kid own Desert Bus? Or worse, Fallout 3, the game that is appropriate for adults but would be really depressing for a child due to the nature of how children get treated in the Fallout series?

In most cases I would say, based on my sociological research, that media effects is a stupid and irresponsible media reception theory, but a 9 year old watching 52 hours of depressing TV per week is just... argh screw it blame the PARENTS for this... even Spongebob no matter how much it is maligned I would let my children watch because I liked it when I was growing up. But my kids wouldn't be allowed to watch Dexter.

I believe that in Lawrence Kutner's book: Grand Theft Childhood. a children's psychological expert is quoted as saying "there are a thousand things that affect childhood development, and video games are way down on the list." he also says that bad parenting is in the top three factors, so why dont they ask the parents why he hung himself?

Hmm.. I don't remember any games where you're supposed to commit suicide... But seriously wtf? This has gotta be the worst one I've heard.

Ok, we can see this in a few ways...

1. The media and shit are always saying playing violent video games is bad, and that kids are influenced by the games. Well I for one can tell the difference between fantasy, and reality. If some kid thinks he can do things he sees in games, go right ahead. It won't get him anywhere and in some cases he could die. If he or she, is that stupid, then good riddance. Natural Selection am I right?

2. Gaming has become so big nowadays that the media cannot do shit to the Video Game community. Jack Thompson failed epically. (Then again he is an idiot.) The only thing they can do and probably have is put age restrictions on games, but there is an easy way around that, get someone old enough to buy it. Easily done. Some parents don't even care so good job laws, you fail. So really stories like these don't mean anything when the media just blames Video Games. Does anyone remember that guy that stopped a robbery or some shit, and he said something about Video Games and everyone started praising Video Games? Well, just goes to show...

It's just scapegoating. In the fifties, it was cool to blame violent behavior on rock n' roll. Now, in a media-heavy society, everyone is quick to blame video games and television for everything. Maybe there are details the story doesn't really talk about, but this lady, despite being all certified and junk, seems awfully quick to jump to conclusions. I found it amusing how she basically said she didn't want to blame the family, because tough family situations don't lead to suicide ever. It's dem vidya gamez!!!

This is worse than the evangelist who blamed all our problems on Pokemon, because it was teaching our children to control monsters, and dem monstas are deh devilz' works!!

Right, because bullying and/or his parents not caring about him TOTALLY WASN'T A FACTOR.

Also the kids would be watching less of the adult TV shows if you'd give us back cartoons like Popeye and Freakazoid instead of bullshit like Dora the Explorer and Sponge Bob.
Really? Dora and Spongebob are bullshit? Gee, I thought they were shows that were attempting to make children learn and laugh respectively! Boy, you sure proved me wrong!

Does everything have to be violent with you people?

This reminds me of a David Firth video (flash) on influence of the media;
http://www.fat-pie.com/thechildthatsmeltfunny.htm
"...We do realize that you were replicating something you saw on an advert..."

I personally feel it's a bit irrational to rule out the family and the society the kid grew up in. I know younger kids are more influenced by media, but seriously, video games?

What the hell kind of games do you hang yourself in?

If anything, blame it on the media monster for making a big deal about every single event and blowing things out of proportion. I really dislike the media... And I vote right on the American Political Spectrum (*gasp*).
