I was talking with a friend from Canada and he mentioned his neighbors will have to dial 911 over some burglary that had occurred. I was confused and told him I didn't know that 911 was used in Canada as well as in the U.S.

Well, it turns out it isn't, and he'd thought it was from watching so many cops shows made in America.

Anyway, I was curious if anyone else, especially non-americans, has thought 911 was the emergency phone number outside the U.S. or has encountered anyone who has.

As a further note, I'd like to know what it actually is wherever you are.

EDIT: I have been proven wrong! haha at least in most parts of Canada as many have pointed out to me. But he mentioned something about having to dial 272 and he's in Ontario. So.....? o_O

Of course 911 is not the emergency number outside the US. In Britain, for instance, it is 0118-999-881-999-119-7253. ;)

In Sweden, it's 112.
However! If you call 911, you'll be redirected to the emergency center anyways.

Weird that Canada don't do the same thing.

Well, I'm in England. We have 999, because accidentally calling emergency services by leaning on your phone (btw, you can call emergency services without unlocking the keys) is so funny.

More strange, to me, is that your friend who lives in Canada does not know how to contact the police. I mean that in the politest way possible, but how does he not know? That would seem up there on the list of things you ought to know where you live.

When I went to Escapism UK, travel sites made sure I knew the emergency number was 999 (I think) and not 911, but it's not like my phone worked there, anyways.

Apparently it's quite common for children to think that the number is 911 (from American TV shows such as Sesame Street). Anyway; here in the UK it's either 999 or 112 (though hardly anyone knows about the latter).

Exactly same here in Finland. The emergency number is 112, but if you dial 911 it directs it back to 112. Incidentally, my birthday is 11.02.

It's 000 in Australia but there's so many silly people influenced by television that 911 redirects to 000

OT: Nope, it's always been 999 across the water. It make far more sense.

Over here they do ads during children's programming, reminding children the proper code (000) for that exact reason.

In New Zealand, calling 911 just redirects you to 111, which is our emergency peoples number.

I think 911, 999 and 112 all work in the UK. 999 is the official one, and 112 is the European number.
