I'm starting to run out of interesting thread titles.

Anyway, here's a straight question for all of you. What are some games that you think get a free ride to popularity because of nostalgia?

ALSO What games do you think other people will put on this list that you still enjoy?

For me, the former category would be empty without some mention of the early Final Fantasy games. I was late to the FF party; I never played a FF game until the GC generation, and by then I had already played plenty of other RPGs and JRPGs. When a friend of mine finally lent me FF7 to try (because I had heard it wildly proclaimed as the best game EVARRRRRRR), I got two hours in and got so bored I couldn't continue.
While I'm at it, let's add GoldenEye to the list too. Yes it was fucking awesome at the time, but unless you have a huge stiffy for James Bond - and even in those graphics, I can't blame you - it really doesn't stack up against anything more recent, or Perfect Dark.

Perfect Dark is the game I will put in the latter category. I saw it mentioned in another thread that nostalgia is the reason the upgrade has a 4.5/5 rating on XBLA and this is probably true. That said, it still made my week when I found out there was a new version and my brother and I have been playing the hell out of it. I don't think it will ever get old for me.

EDIT: Dear God, how did I forget Doom? Whenever I get sick of the mainstream FPS bullshit that clogs up the market, I get on my dad's old computer and fire up Doom 2. Yeah, the graphics suck and there's virtually no story, but there are a variety of baddies to murder, a standard but useful slew of guns to murder them with, and the haunting certainty that right around the corner is something that's going to murder you first.

So in recap, my list:

Games that get a free ride:
FF7 (and early FFs in general)
GoldenEye

Games that deserve the free ride:
Perfect Dark
Doom and Doom II

New Super Mario Bros Wii. Only because of nostalgia (or false nostalgia) does it sell so well, and get great reviews.

Yea, its is true...people tend to love the games they grew up with, regardless of any flaws.

Games that get a free ride:

Super Mario Bros. (Seriously, can we shut the fuck up about this game! It was good back in the day, but now!)

FF7 ( It was good, but it has gotten more praise than it really deserves)

Games that deserve it:

Earthbound ( Sadly, it does not get any at all!)
The Older SHin megami tensei games besides the persona series ( Seriously, Persona isn't the only title in the series! There are dozens of games!)

I never played goldeneye in its heyday I ended up getting it in a box of old N64 games someone ended up leaving when they ran out of their house to avoid paying rent. It never really won me over. Timesplitters was our game of choice when it came to shooting eachother on the same tv. I never played any 3d final fantasies. I have played Final Fantasy Legends 1 and 3 but that is really my only experiance with them.

Free Ride: Anything pre-FF7 as they are all proclaimed as the GOD OF ALL FINAL FANTASY AND 7 IS THE DEVIL CHILD

Deserved Free Ride: I 'unno, Baldur's Gate?

Dungeon Keeper! That games never ceases to be entertaining.

And I almost forgot about Outcast. Why are some of the most awesome games so difficult to run properly on modern computers? >.>

I agree with this. The New Super Mario Bros. games only do well because of people's nostalgia for the classic Super Mario Bros. games, but while the classics are great, the "New" ones just suck.

OT: Doom and all the other early 90s FPS's. People only like these because of nostalgia. They suck.

And Deus Ex. I tried playing it recently, and it's really bad. Maybe it was great in 2000, but it's pretty awful now. Unlike the Super Mario classics, it has not stood the test of time very well at all.

Medievil. Truly, truly amazing game. I forgive the suckish pixelated graphics because the gameplay was fantastic.
