Personally? there's not much you can do after borderlands and all its expansions except add a character creation system or 4-player split-screen, and they didn't
it seems more like an upgrade than an outright sequel for now, but i'll wait and see.
EDIT: I say you can't add much to borderlands because it had enough ideas packed into it that making a sequel would require it to jump the shark, and not in a good way
Well you could always add, you know, an actual story. Which seems to be what they're doing.
well it didn't need a story. it was just a big lootfest and it did that very well. it was so tightly put together that i can't think of anything else to add to it except what i mentioned.
maybe if it was more of the same and came at a discounted price point it would be acceptable, but as far as i can see there isn't much you can add and/or change without comprimising what borderlands already is, which is a loot-based grind-a-thon, which it seems people were already happy with (judging by the sales)
Whether it
needed a story or not is irrelevant, as many people would have liked to see a story in it, and many others still expected a story to be in the game when they bought it. You don't have to compromise the loot grind-esque aspects of the game to add that, you just have to give a the player a reason for grinding it in the first place. An ultimate purpose, if you will, supplemented by smaller goals leading up to it.
Even Diablo and Torchlight have stories, yet still have plenty of the loot grindy aspect in them.
