I am just curious fellow escapists, which old games to you have held there value the best. try to stay away from this gen of course.

Mine is Panzer Dragoon, The sound track in it is just stunning, the gameplay is awesome and I have it on my Sega Saturn, which I have in a box, however I just played it waiting for Skyrim. defiantly an experience.

I still play a bunch of PS2 games - Sands of Time trilogy, Battlefront 2, Timesplitters: Future Perfect. All still fun and probably won't ever get old for me.

Going even further back, Goldeneye for N64. That game did so many things right. The soundtrack fit in and the gameplay was just amazing (especially for the time). I especially liked that enemies reacted differently to being shot in different places.

Even further back would be Super Mario World on SNES. Classic Mario and a whole lot of fun. Level design was great and I really like the music and lightheartedness of the whole game.

The two that would immediately pop into my mind are Sonic Adventure and Kotor as they were both my favorite games on their respective systems 10 years ago.

Based on what I've seen, Doom on the Super Nintendo seems like a good one. I haven't played that so disregard that unless you have it and agree

As for games I have actual experience with, Link to the Past is a great game. It was revolutionary in it's day (I assume) and still stands up years and years later. Speaking of first-party Nintendo games...

Star Fox. Not the super nintendo game though, the N64 title! If it didn't withstand the test of time it wouldn't have been remade [sub]probably[/sub]. Also, knock the N64 control if you will but Star Fox 64 is thought to have been what sold so many Nintendo 64's when it was first launched!

Xenogears, for the PS1.

Best game ever. Played it through repeatedly. Love that game.

How old are we talking here? A console generation or two? Before the advent of proper 3D?

I'd say Baldur's Gate 2 has ages spectacularly well with its high resolution artwork and interface, but then that's only around 10 or so years old now. Makes me feel kinda old, but whatever.

Isn't it obvious? X-Com: UFO Defense.
This as well, definitely. I only actually picked up X-Com around two years ago and yet despite the absolutely shit visuals it still remains a damned good experience. There just isn't anything else quite like it and certainly nothing that does what it does nearly as well. That's why I'm so pissed about the 'new' take on the franchise. Bleh! I don't want another stupid shooter, I want another X-Com.

Ah well!

Nethack is also pretty entertaining despite being around the same age as I am. Fun game to play in little snippets at a time, despite having grown up playing this game (My father had it on his work computer when I was a wee lil' thing) never have beaten it.

Well, I'm running Syndicate at the moment. I also loved the old Spyro games, Omega Boost, Hexen and many more.

Not counting the PS2 games I was going ot rattle off but then realized thats too easy, I'd say Spyro the dragon, Crash bandicoot, and possibly Blasto.

...

Though Im still a sucker to pop in Soul edge every once and while when I want to get nostalgic.

X-Com: UFO Defense and Jagged Alliance 1 and 2. They just don't make turn based tactical shooters like this any more. In fact, they don't make turn based tactical shooters AT ALL.

Planescape: Torment is over a decade old now and still hasn't been equaled or surpassed in terms of story quality.

Ultima IV-VII were revolutionary games that introduced RPG concepts that were 1-2 decades ahead of their time and have only recently begun to get caught up to.

Sid Meier's Pirates! is as fun today as it was in 1987.

M.U.L.E. is timeless.

Holy shit, someone else who knows about HeXen. In all my gaming years I have never met anyone else who knows about this game outside my family.

I will always recommend this game when this thread pops up, Battletoads. That game is damned amazing and hard as hell.

I shall also give props to Harvestmoon 64, Bomberman 64, Super Mario RPG as well as King of Dragons. I think everyone should play these games, with maybe the exception of Harvestmoon since it is rather niche (at least I think so)

[a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claw_(video_game)]Claw[/a], [a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlezone_(1998_video_game)]Battlezone 1[/a] and [a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlezone_2]2[/a] and of course [a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Control_II]Ur-Quan Masters[/a]. I still play these games from time to time, especially the latter.

I still enjoy playing GTA San Andreas again and again. This last time I'm actually using cheats just for kicks, having beaten it three or four times without.
