I feel your pain man. In 4th or 5th grade my dog ran away never to be heard from again. Then between my freshman and sophomore years my other dog passed. We believe he might have been poisoned by somebody, as there were at the time numerous reports of animals being poisoned.

Mine was named Bob (my ex and best friend's husband named him. They love telling the story of how he got his name)...
Does it have anything to do with Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Almighty Bob)?
I doubt it, but that'd be awesome.
Actually... no. I was in the bathroom with my ex filling up the tub for our turtle and my ex was holding it trying to figure out a name. My best friend's husband came into the bathroom when he heard we found a turtle. He asked my ex what it's name was and my ex said 'I don't know but it looks like a Bob'. He said it as a joke. My best friend's husband said 'What's up Bob?' to the turtle jokingly. My ex and my best friend's husband will swear that the turtle turned its head and looked at my best friend's husband when he said that so the name stuck.

...and would eat more then lettuce. It ate chicken fingers, french fries, and lot of other things that you wouldn't expect a turtle to eat.
Awww, a turtle eating french fries sounds so cute.
I'm not normally like that, but I really have a soft spot for turtles.
It was adorable. I was so proud of the turtle when it ate chicken because chicken is my favorite food. I loved that turtle so much.

I think it may be because you may form a tighter bond with your animal then your family. I mean, dogs are always excited to see you when you come home, always want to be with you, and make you feel truely appreciated, wanted, and needed.

What he said. Its because dogs have been conditioned since we first started domesticating them to be absolutely loyal. Since inspiring that kind of loyalty in a human takes years and years of work, and the same loyalty only takes a few months with a dog, its pretty easy to see why someone can get more attached to a dog than a fellow person.

I myself was super close to my dog until I went off to university. After a semester of being completely separated from me, he completely changed his behaviour around me. He is still friendly towards me, but he doesn't even obey my commands anymore, and shows a lot less interest in me. It was kinda sad really. It might be that he forgot me over the four months I was away, or he's just mad at me for leaving him with my parents (who consequently never played with him or showed him even the slightest affection, since my parents didn't want another dog after the last one died). Oh well I guess.

Dogs are the weirdest animals because it?s so easy to become attached to them and they are around for so little time I put down my American Eskimo today and i feel more sorrow than when a distant family member dies.
Sorry to hear that mate... My dog is near the end of his rope now, something I'm not looking forward to. But you'll get better with time, I know you will.

Sounds bad, what happened to it?
Well, it ran away (I have been teased so much about that) and when we finally found it again (many, many months later) we had a pregnant cat and two dogs at the time and we felt like we weren't giving the turtle enough attention. It got a lot of attention from us before it ran away. So we decided to release it at a lake where we believed it would be happier.

Hum, I figured their biggest flaw was that they couldn't look up.

Seriously though, sorry for your loss. It always sucks to have to bury a good friend.

Ah, that's alright then.
I feared something bad had happened to it.

Well, you have to admit, a turtle "running" away is quite funny.
Reminds me of that story with the turtle and the rabbit.

The biggest floor in a dog is that it cant look up, Or so the myth tell.

Hmm now that a think about it, one of my Huskies is getting a bit old and lazy, makes me worry somewhat.
