Hey guys I read these forums all the time and enjoy them greatly. I guess I just wanted to ask everyone advice since this is a public forum and everything. My father just died a couple of day ago and not only do I think he is the best man I have ever known, but he is also the man that introduced me to computer games and table top games. I guess I am just opening up this topic so that people can remember where they learned playing games from and what they are going to teach people after them.

I'm really sorry to hear about your father. My mother passed away back in April, so I know how you must feel right now. If you ever want to talk or anything, just let me know.

I think I picked up gaming from my Father - he is and has always been a big computer enthusiast, and we used to play games a lot together on our old Macintosh and the Nintendo as well, and then later the Playstation. I eventually got into games even more, surpassing my Dad's interest in them. We still play games sometimes on his PS3 though. But he never was into tabletop RPGs (he absolutely hates to read XD), so I guess I kind of just got into those myself.

If I ever have kids (and that's a big if >_>), I'll definitely see if they become interested in video games or RPGs, and encourage it and play with them whenever I can. But I won't force them to if they're not.

I love your avatr, btw. Rocko's Modern Life was a great show!

Firstly, my condolences. I have a similar relationship with my father, and I would hate to loose him.

I got into games because of my dad. He's introduced me to table-top and Online RPGs, and for Christmas I'm DMing a game of Dresdenverse for my family, so I've kept up that spark since he introduced it to me when I was 5.

My dad taught me how to play Donkey Kong on the NES, as well as showing me the tips and tricks for board games like Monopoly. In a way, he started me on the hobbies I enjoy today.

First off, sorry to hear about your Dad, I'm sure he was a lovely bloke.

I'm not sure I got into gaming from anyone really. First proper gaming I can recall was getting a gameboy colour with Pokemon blue and Tarzan from my parents when I was...8 ish? I think it just snowballed from there really, 'cause I enjoyed myself so much.

Your father was made of win. My dad kinda of got me into games, educational stuff like Reader Rabbit and Operation Neptune. Come to think of it, he used to play those games with me. I need to do something nice for him. Thanks for making me remember that.

No problem! I'm so glad that I can remind people that they should remember their families. My family is frayed right now so make sure that you all are set and enjoying the holidays.

My dad would turn in his grave if I were a complete geek. I'd swear the old man would be most proud of me for convincing my girlfriends to watch sports with me. That was our biggest father-son connection when I was little, watching Red Sox games and watching Larry Bird shoot three-pointers.

The gaming part I don't think he'd approve of. He was way too practical and way too keen on making productive use even of free time (watching sports aside, but in his mind even that served a purpose---to grease the social wheels with the guys at work or school.)
