Regarding the Controller issues, the Xbox360 Controller has basically become the reference-model for most PC games and they offer support for it right out of the box without any issues.
Any similar X-Input-based Controller like for instance this one from Logitech will also work fine if you don't want to give Microsoft any money: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/gamepad-f310
I'm using a 310. It seems to forget its bindings at random intervals. Fortunately, I know how to get it back fairly quickly now. Needless to say, suddenly having your control scheme change when you're not anywhere near a fire is extremely annoying though.

*Sigh*...the game is made for consoles. When FROM said they'd do a port with the barest optimisation possible because it isn't their thing, they meant it. Try a controller.

I didn't think Dark Souls was so hard. Even on the PC. I just made some adjustments.

I'm still stuck in the "getting it working" part.

Two registry edits later (?!?!??!????!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!), I've deleted a bunch of my Windows folder (DON'T ACTUALLY DO THIS) so I can fit it on my C drive.
Why didn't you install it on another partition?
Because it's supposed to not work on the not-default partition.

Why/How? Only Satan knows.
I installed it on E:\ (technically, in E:\Games\RPG\) and had no problems there. With and without the DSfix, too. It should work with a different partition. OK, maybe I'll have to rephrase that to be clear - if it fails, it shouldn't be the fault of the partition.
Well, mine was on D:/, I did all the other fixes I could find (including REGISTRY MODIFICATION), so I'm reaching the end of my options, and I heard that it can be a problem.

So we'll see.
Dark Souls shouldn't fuck with the registry at all. I have a somewhat old PC (5 years with an AMD HD 5450) and it has no issues what so ever. In fact, it's the only game that played nice with Vista and the Release Preview for Windows 8 and didn't crash even once, even without DSFix.

I'll try my best to help. What exactly is happening when you launch the game?
Nothing.

A window pops up, taking up the bottom right 5/7ths of my screen, hanging off of it.

Then it stays black.

And it continues to stay black until I either move the window (stops responding) or let it sit for two minutes (standard no-information error message).

EDIT:

I have 64-bit Windows 7
Geforce 560 GTX
a 2.4 GHz i7, don't remember the exact model
RealTek sound chip
Antec 1000 watt power supply

Seems standard enough.
It seems to be a redist issue. Did you verify the game files through Steam?
Twice and re-install.
You said you mucked about in the registry. Why not run CCleaner to fix any issues you might have? I usually find that this helps slim down the system after you have installed/reinstalled applications.

While you're at it, do the normal system maintenance tasks ie, defragmenting and Disk Cleanup.
It was a simple muckaround, I've completely restored it to norm (it was three letter changes).

I've run CCleaner six times, no dice.

I have Nvidia. <link=http://i41.tinypic.com/tarp6w.jpg>The goat sacrifice is only needed for ATI.

Anyways, I've updated them, reinstalled GFWL, mucked with the registry, unmucked with the registry, deleted the movie folder, undeleted the movie folder, and done everything conceivable short of sacrifice myself to the From Software Gods.

I guess I'll reinstall GFWL... AGAIN...
Check out PC Gaming Wiki for the game, it has solutions for all known problems and guides how to install stuff: http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Dark_Souls:_Prepare_to_Die_Edition
Also, try installing and starting the game without any Mods, Registry changes or anything at first. If it goes fine, go from there.
It doesn't cover many of the fixes I've seen (and tried) elsewhere. No luck. Thanks for the tip, though.

DAY TWO:

I started over again. I hated my Knight. She was sluggish and manly, and I felt I'd messed up a fair bit in the early going, dying too often and frittering away souls. I re-roll as a Cleric. In place of my Knight's shiny armor, I have a big blousy skirt, in fashionable brown. I also discover the advanced face customization options, allowing for 1100 different variations of homely. I spend a good 20 minutes hand-crafting a homely face especially to my liking, and then log into the game, where it is instantly mummified.

The controls are feeling more comfortable now, and I easily breeze through the tutorial. The jailer demon only kills me once this time. Amateur. I shout "Lol noob!" at him as I exit the chamber.

I'm back in the new area, with my friend the giant crow and Ser Bad Actor. Hahahahaha! He says, helpfully. I run around smashing pots and collecting loot. Whilst doing so, I discover entire areas tucked away I hadn't stumbled into before, littered with chests. Tense, I expect a trap. There is no trap. I happily burgle the chests and carry on.

A graveyard! With numerous items shining, waiting to be picked up! Tense, I expect a trap. My expectations do not go unfulfilled a second time as skeletons boil up out of the earth. Pfft, I think. Skeletons. I've been killing skeletons for ages now. I'm the Michael Jordan of skeleton killing. I raise my mace threateningly, and they cut me to ribbons.

Humbled, I crawl back for my green remains. It's a short run, literally seconds. This heartens me. I will test my mettle against these skeletons again.

And again!

And again!

Have at thee!

Again!

Finally I relent and satisfy myself with dashing through the graveyard snatching items left and right with a conga line of outraged skeletons behind me. At the last second, I give them a brisk salute, and roll to freedom. Alas, there was a gravestone between me and freedom. No matter, the ill gotten gains remain mine. I poke through my loot back at the firepit while Ser Bad Actor looks on. It's a lot of PvP stuff. I also get some souls, which I promptly devour. Ser Bad Actor seems unperturbed by the sight of the leathery mummy eating souls by the fire after flying in on the back of a terrifying raven. He is clearly not cut from heroic cloth.

I spent the next several hours poking my way through the undead burg. I'm not going to bore you with the details. Suffice it to say I know that first stretch of burg better than I know my own neighborhood. There was a lot of undead on undead violence. I leveled up a fair bit. I put my points all over the place. I have no idea what I'm doing.

There was a Black Knight. I killed him, after several aborted attempts. I climbed a little ladder, and threw fire bombs at him, and then jumped down and slew him with an expert bit of swordsmanship. Actually, I scrambled around in terror quaffing potions and bumping into walls and eventually slew him through sheer attrition. He dropped an enormous sword. I put it in my magic box. That's not innuendo, by the way, I literally have a magic box. It's filled with all kinds of crap. Often I find a broken sword, or a piece of rubbish, or a skeleton loincloth. "I might need that later," I say, and place it in my magic box. It's like a hope chest.

I took the Master Key this time, instead of the little amulet thing that was meant to regenerate my hit points and never appeared to be doing any such thing. Excited, I attempted to open the first door I came across. LOCKED, it said, sternly. So it's more of an Apprentice Key, really. It has opened some interesting doors though. One lead me to a burly chap named Havel. He swung a great mace at me and killed me in a single blow. I came back, and this time I rolled around ferociously. He clipped me with his mace, killing me in a single blow. I came back, stripped off all my armor, and pranced around him, tickling his rubs with my shiny new spear. He killed me in a single blow. I resolved to save Havel for later and carried on.

I fought a great hairy demon on a long, narrow catwalk. I stood between his legs and poked his groin while he clipped around my head, jittering back and forth, doing nothing. It seemed possible he was an Autistic Demon, and I felt somewhat guilty for killing him. There was a message on the ground just behind him, that said "I DID IT". I wonder if the demon wrote it himself. He seemed like an optimistic chap. I bow my head in sorrow.

I meet a new person, whom I shall dub Ser Mumbles. Ser Mumbles rambles out some crap, and finishes up with a laugh. Hahahahaha! He says. Earlier, I met an undead shopkeep. He also finished up with a laugh, something along the lines of heeheeheeheehee! The Undead Burg is a place of great and lasting hilarity. Ser Mumbles says we should help each other. I agree. I expect him to come with me. He does not. He's apparently quite happy to stay where he is, peering over the battlements. I am briefly tempted to push him over.

More time passes. There's a bridge, and a dragon, and a lot of creeping around ledges which I expertly fall off several times. Whoops, a skeleton poked my ankle, off I go! Whoops, a rat startled me, off I go! Whoops, that's not the right button, off I go! When I'm not plunging to my death in futile fashion, I'm getting poisoned by rats. There is much profanity. I have colorful things to say about save checkpoints.

I eventually survive the Sisyphean task of actually getting inside the Parish, and proceed to do great things. I kill a boar...by accident! It runs into the fire. I kill some skeletons! I run shrieking from a special looking skeleton, only to find he is easily defeated! Filled with confidence, I forget to target lock a second special skeleton, who stabs me in the back repeatedly before I figure out what's gone wrong! I get to do it all again! Whee!

Eventually, in sweaty desperation and terror of dying, I find another firepit. There's a Blacksmith here. He doesn't end his conversation with me in maniacal laughter, making him my new favorite NPC.

I overcome a big fat skeleton.

I overcome a mage and an army of wussies.

I find a guy in a cage. I let him out. He promises to reward me. "Later" he says. I'm skeptical.

This seems like a good time to save, as I've accumulated a few souls which I'm sure to lose at any moment. I take them to my new best friend Ser Blacksmith and have him upgrade my chain mail and my spear, making them fancy. After he's done, my gamepad decides to forget its bindings again, making this the perfect time to quit.

Ongoing impressions:

1. Getting used to the control scheme. It certainly doesn't feel smooth...especially when attempting to juke or dodge, and getting a target lock can be unnecessarily fussy (given how essential it is)...but it's quite manageable. Every now and then I do something slick, and I'm like "Hey, I've got this shit figured out". I usually die shortly thereafter.

2. The checkpoint saving is a bit ugly. There's some LONG stretches of trash that can be quite punitive without an intermediary checkpoint. Does it add tension? The first couple of times, yes. By the third or fourth time, it's tedious. By the fifth or sixth time, it's approaching "Fuck this shit" territory.

3. I've heard much about the lore. Where's the lore? There's not really much story being given to me. I love the atmosphere, but the only text I get is from the idiots I talk to, most of whom are REALLY bad actors delivering some questionable dialogue.

4. It's a good game, I'll stick with it for now. If the space between campfires keeps getting longer and longer, though, and the game continues to get harder, I could see frustration eventually overwhelming my enjoyment. For now, though, it's pretty fun, and rewarding, peppered with extreme irritation.

Where's the lore?
It's there for those who look for it. Take that stash you found by the graveyard. Do you think it belongs to anyone? If so, what does the contents tell you about that person?

That's kind of how the lore is told in this game. Nothing is spelled out to the player. It's all item discriptions and enviroments. Some stuff is spread throughout the game, waiting for the player to put it all together. If you want to know what's going on you'll have to use your imagination and a bit of detective work.

Really enjoyed reading this "diary":)

I actually prefer the KB+M controls for some reason...

Even though it's a horrible port, at least you won't get single digit framerates like those inferior (sarcasm) consoles. You seem to not be enjoying it very much, but stick with it. It grows on you eventually:)

Good luck. The game is pretty fun but the controls are terrible. Having played it with an Xbox controller and a mouse/keyboard,I can say they are pretty bad with both. I actually find mouse/keyboard easier to use but that is probably because I have a lot more experience with it.
You will die a lot to the bad controls and the awful camera. Ironically, the actual game isn't that hard. I wouldn't even rate it in my top 10 hardest games. If it had solid controls, it would be a cake walk. You'll get used to the controls eventually though, but it doesn't make them good.

Some notes:

- Classes don't matter beyond like 1 hour of gameplay. Unless you want to Min/Max hardcore that is.

- Glad to see your improvement on the jailer demon!

- Careful with the leveling, you might not find suitable Coop partners if you go too high and on the other hand the PvP opponents might have way better loot. If you don't plan to interact with people, then worry less about it.

- Again, careful with leveling, in general there seem to be 4 good builds, those are:

*STR focus

*Faith focus

*Dex focus

*Int focus

For each, the idea is to level the desired focused ability to 40 alongside End and Vit, and only put the minimum on the other stats (to be able to cast some spells or weild the desired weap). Seems resistance is ALWAYS a shitty idea btw.
Also Dex and Int seem to be the favourite PvP builds BTW.

- The magic box is useless for the most part, it's only use is to store beyond your capacity to carry 99 items of the same kind. And gratz for the sword, it's a very good one if you go STR.

- Havel is indeed hard the first time around :p

- You can indeed engage and kill Ser Mumbles if you so desire. Also, he gave you an item to leave your mark in the world and other players can use it to summon you to help.

- Mate, those rats are like 1 min away from the burg checkpoint. You just need to explore around the area under the bridge, and if you see a ladder, try to interact with it.

- Yeah, that BS is also my favourite NPC so far.

- "The lore" it's bit and pieces of info chained by eager fans and then expanded by their imagination. Kinda reminds me when i saw that Movie Bob review of Sucker Punch, fans read WAY too much into them. Then again, I do love this kind of inconclusive disjunct story, and i do love the lore of dark souls, but ... yeah...
Anyway so far you know about the dragons, the primal fire, the guys that defeated them and how now their power seems about to end; besides that Ser Mumbles told you that time is bend in this place, the entire area is a "twilight zone" wich actually suits the multiplayer mechanics amazingly well, and about the undead curse.

Finally, i am also slowly advancing in the game with just a few days further ahead, so if you need something hit me up.

Clive Howlitzer said:
The game is as hard as you want. My first try i was leveling up as much as possible and using good weaps and a lot of coop play, after reaching anor londo decided to restart. Now i am running a single digit level run... get fucking hard -.-

Guess you can say that about any game tough, but this one is especially good at it allowing multiple builds.

As for how hard it is? IMO no game without a ranked PvP system is that hard anyway, but thats just me.

Backtracking never bored me while playing Demon's and Dark Souls, and I really like checkpoints, especially when they have some meaning (bonfires in Dark Souls, the couch in Ico, the shrines in Shadow of the Colossus etc). Maybe it's the possibility of finding hidden items or shortcuts while passing through the same place for the tenth time, or the occasional PvP matches, or just the interesting combat and atmosphere. Anyway, sometimes I prefer something more relaxing, I can't blame people who don't like the franchise.

I'll never forget my first playtrough. It's so rare to find a big game without maps with trillions of markers. I'm already getting bored with Far Cry 3. Not a bad game, but it looks like I'm filling a long list of chores instead of just enjoying the adventure. It is in these moments that I remember what Dark Souls did so well.

Yeah... it's far easier playing on the xbox or playstation... or so I hear. Either way, it's fun, and it gets more and more fun, more and more addictive as well... :)

Anyone else think that the game needs PVP flagging? It's seems impossible to use humanity to call a friend in for a boss fight, especially in the undead burg, because people keep invading every 3 minutes with superior gear. It's probably less of an issue late game with better gear and stats, but early on it's kind of dumb.

Have you got a Nvidia card, as one of the recent drivers conflicts with DSfix. I don't can't remember the number driver, but you might want to try roll back.

I am using 310.60 driver with no problems. I don't know if the issue has been fixed through Nvidia or DS fix, but the problem was recent of DSfix 2.1

Good luck.

Hah, I'm surprised I'm enjoying a text LP of Dark Souls as much as I am. The problems people have with certain aspects of this game continue to baffle me (I don't mean technical problems, that's just bad luck and porting) but it does bring me back to my own first playthrough. Anyone who recommends a knight for first time players hasn't got a fucking clue what he's talking about.

When it comes to dodging, either go full tank or full nimble, in which case you'll need a special ring which allows you to do ninja flips.

Also, join the Way of the White covenant. There's a load of covenants you can join in the game, but this particular one will allow you to sync up better with other summonable players online, and will also keep invading black phantoms more at bay. And fyi, If you are in human form and in an area that still has a Boss, black phantoms will be able to invade. In hollow form you're safe.

And get your summon sign out there. Getting summoned to someone else's world is the absolute greatest as you don't lose your souls if you die. And this allows you to confront a Boss and study its attack pattern without risking your soul stash.

I could give you more advice, but that would ruin the many surprises the game has in store for you.

By the way, that's a pretty damn entertaining let's play diary.
