From what I hear a stealth and archery mix is broken to the point of insanity.
meh, archery does not scale as well as magic or melee. i have max +bow damage armor with all of the archer perks and dragon fights still take forever. not to mention the medium mobs still take 2-3 sneak attack hits. the high end draugr can take upwards of 10 sneak attack arrows.

sneak 2x daggers on the other hand one shot everything so far. and i dont even have all of the 1h perks or 1h damage in every armor slow.

that said, archery is hella fun. it is still useful in the level 60's but it does tapper off a bit.

The trick is getting your skills built up to that point. It'll be a fun challenge. The great thing about Skyrim, at least in my experience, is that pretty much any path you choose can work. Some may be harder, granted, but it'll still work.

Bottom line, jump right in! You'll have a blast.
The trick with Stealth(at least for me) is avoiding the temptation to max it out before I even leave Helgen Keep..

Don't be a mage. They made magic pathetic this time around. Why bother flinging ineffectual spells when you can craft and enchant a weapon to obliterate everything in your path? You'd figure, what with the pretty graphics tied to spells, that they'd've encouraged their use.

Also, stay away from mammoths and giants.
Mages can be quite OP in Skyrim, based on my experience. I haven't played in a long while so I don't remember the name of the perk, but there's a perk that makes it so that when you dual cast spells, it automatically stuns an enemy. Not a single enemy is immune to this. Even dragons are susceptible(I don't know about Alduin, I never got to fight him in the first place). So just get four pieces of equipment with -25% mana cost on Destruction magic and bam, infinite mana with infinite stun. You get the first shot and it's game over for the enemy. It's quite humorous at times, but can definitely get boring.

The only thing I know about Archery is that if you get really high Conjuration and Conjure Bow, you can have some fun. Thaat's...about all I got. :x
Yea, I don't know where people are getting the idea magic is bad. What you listed is what I did on a full heavy armor suit. -100% destruction/illusion costs, with a set of other items for restoration was unstoppable.

One issue with stealth + archery is that while you'll constantly get 6xdmg stealth hits, it makes going through dungeons take about twice as long,
I did bow + stealth on my first run through, then did a 2hander character, the speed difference is quite startling

I've heard the armor cap is fairly low, like 567 apparently for 80% physical mitigation,
so if you go sword & shield then heavy armor is pretty overkill.

Whatever you do. If you specialize in one handed, don't do the later quests of the Thieves Guild until you are level 46+. The quest involves breaking into a certain person's house in Riften. I won't say who because of spoilers. There is a weapon in that house that is one of the few leveled items in the game. This means that the higher your level upon retrieving the weapon, the more powerful that weapon will be.

The level 46+ version of this weapon is the best one handed weapon in the game. It even beats out smithing your own weapon because it has a higher base damage than daedric swords and comes with a pretty awesome enchantment.

I personally gave found the assassin type of play style to be the most fun followed by a destruction/conjuration mage.

Also, avoid climbing the Throat of the World until you are around level 15 unless you bring a follower with you.

P.S. Pissing off giants is unhealthy at low levels.

Honestly? My reccomendation is,if your computer can handle it,get the computer version, which will allow you to mod the game to craft a customized experience, but I realize that this isn't an option for everyone. Aside from that, just as your level twelve level up in Oblvion says: Just go a little crazy, and watch as everything turns to gold.

What bow are you using? My legendary daedric bow does 174 damage and this is me only using a couple items I found to enhance my smithing. I have a ring of archery and use the ancient shroud armor so I do get some nice bonuses to archery. If you focus on having the bow as your primary source of damage you shouldn't have any trouble taking down death lords in 2-3 hits.

My assassin is level 51 and I don't think anything actually levels with you past 50.

Put it on one of the two hardest difficulties if you want to get decent length or challenge out of the game. Perhaps the middle one if you are completely new to TES. The only thing that really stands the slightest chance against you as an archer is giants or mages that get too close.

Didn't have any problems with them as two handed heavy armor guy.

Thank you for all the suggestions everyone. From what I am gauging, archery is fairly easy to play, but severely hinders your fun over time by being overpowered. A backup weapon is also a good idea, because what am I going to do if somebody sees me, heh.

Perhaps I could try some kind of magic/archery combo, but that seems kind of redundant now that I think about it.
On the contrary, my build is an archery/magic combo, and I find the game coming alive in a way that most other games with melee/archery/magic setups don't. Spells like DOUBLE HEALING keep you from spending more than a pittance on health potions. The archery gear is pretty light, and various arrows abound. Finding more powerful arrows is difficult, but it teaches you to make your shots count. Double fire works pretty well with some points in it, I use it to damage enemies as they run from really far away, up into my face, and the burning damage means that I can run away and hide while they slowly die. Not to mention, enemies on fire take extra damage from all attacks. Magic users are always a pain, so using a magic build that specializes in electric attacks can drain enemy magic, allowing you to fill their helpless bodies with arrows. Frost may actually be the most useful, I believe it's effect slows people down. I don't even have to tell you how that would benefit a ranged character.
I also chose to go the enchanting route, along with smithing. Focusing on Archery, Light Armor, Smithing and Enchanting, along with your choice of one offensive magic and healing, gives you a very effective character. Stealth is also a plus. You'll be able to forge/craft your bows and armor, enchant it with stat boosts, heal yourself when you take damage, and dish it out in various ways.

Oh, and I noticed you haven't been getting much in the way of general advice. Mine would be to watch out for traps, first and foremost. Not just in the "don't step on that plate" sense, there are also offensive traps, like precariously balanced open-flame lanterns hanging over five enemies standing in a pool of gasoline. Catching those things before you attack lets you get the upper hand. Many times, you can get the environment to kill the enemies for you. The worst traps are the soul gem turrets. If you see a soul gem on what looks like a pedestal, don't look at it, hide. If you shoot it from a distance with an arrow, you can knock it from it's seating and it'll deactivate. Not only did you disarm a trap, you also earned a soul gem. IIRC, they're even charged when you pick them up, from being used as magical traps.

Leave Lydia at home, never bring a follower. Especially if you're a stealth character. I know I'll catch a lot of flak for that one, but I never found the AI companions to ever be helpful enough to bother with them. If you get shadowmere or another halfway decent horse, you'll have a mode of transportation that won't screw up your stealth and also will put up one hell of a fight. A good horse can save your life.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I forgot, Paralyze enchants, especially on bows, are pretty much the best thing ever. Dead enemies freeze in the position they were in when they died, living enemies can be picked up and thrown as though they were ragdolls, albeit extremely rigid.
I still have a few screenshots from when I cleared a room full of bandits, and half of them were still in battle stance or casual stance after they died. I stacked them on top of each other, lined them up against a wall, arranged them like mannequins, the fun never ends!

So far Archery is my favorite of the primary combative choices. I decided to go with a ranger but if you want to get the absolute most out of Archery I suggest;

Max the Archery tree, every skill is useful and the last basically gives you 1 free enchant.
Max enchanting to enchant your bow twice on top of the free enchant you get from max Archery.
Max Smithing to smith the best bow possible.
Light Armor for mobility, stealth, and just plain looking cooler since it easily outclasses heavy.
Getting the Stealth bonus for Archery from Stealth.

Now if you plan on sneaking a lot look into Nightengale and Dark Brotherhood Guild quests as they'll provide you with AMAZING gloves that multiply stealth attacks.

Well this Battle Mage certainly did :p.
This Mage/Ranger did as well. I still have nightmares about the time I accidentally wandered into the Polar Bear Death Cave.

On the flip side, it's absolutely hilarious to watch dragons spew fire at a bear and see the pitiful damage it does, while the bear goes to town on a giant flying carnivorous lizard 3 times its size.

There's also fun to be had enchanting your bow with a spell of paralyze, and shooting a bear. I've never come closer to literally soiling myself playing a video game than the time I paralyzed a bear in aforementioned Polar Bear Death Cave and tried to loot its body, only for it to suddenly return to life, leap to it's feet, roar, and bite my face off.

I don't mean to burst your bubble or anything, but this is true of literally every combat skill in Skyrim.

I'd suggest clearing a town at a time, quest wise, it makes the game a LOT more manageable.

O, and unless you plan on being a thief, don't bother making out the commerce tree.
I wasted so many perks trying to get money that at one point I had damn near 2 MILLION gold saved up.

Nut sure why...I just DID.
