Fallout is not Oblivion with guns. It used the same game engine, and had MANY new elements that Oblivion did not. This made it much better in my personal opinion.

I've never actually played Oblivion for more than two minutes at a time (and that was just to watch Picard give an opening speech), so I can't comment on how similar they actually are.

As to Fallout 1&2 being like Balder's gate, I actually wish they had been more similar. Who's idea was it that I can't directly control my NPCs? I mean, did the developers think it would be fun for Marcus to unleash a minigun burst into the enemy ghoul as I am standing right next to him?

Fallout 1 and 2 were sweet games, and Fallout 3 is very different of course, but not in a bad way, it just is different. 3 was a lot more engaging once I branched out and explored a lot more. If you follow the main story only in 3 its rather short, and somewhat dull. The really good parts of 3 are hidden out in the wilderness, you just need to take the time to discover them.

I could not have said it better myself.
