In my positive psychology class we saw a clip where they studied groups of people to see what their happiness level was, and also what made them happiest in life.

What i'm curious about is what, as gamers, gives you the greatest feeling of joy?

It just interests me to see because most people have very different sources for their positive emotions.

Favourite things in what sense?

Me, as a gamer, has the same joys as a lot of non-gamers. We're not a sub species of human we're the same breed.

As a person I get my happy joy feelings from my wife and kids.

And shooting pixels in the face.

And coffee cake.

And maybe some more pixel shooting.

And long hot baths.

As gamer, nothing makes me happier than being able to fully immerse myself in a game.

Mass Effect, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Fallout, Half-Life, The Elder Scrolls, Bioshock.

Just to name a few.

I am happiest as gamer when I don't realise I've been playing a game for 8 hours straight.

And punk/metalcore music, sausage rolls, Kellogg's Crunchy Nut, Buffy, Batman and beer.

If we're talking stuff about games then... a hook, I guess. If the story, the world, the characters or the gameplay immerse me into the experience, then I get a big fat happy.

I like playing games and having a feeling of fulfillment. Much in the same way I come back from a movie or a book feeling satisfied or from a class feeling like I gained something, a game is at its greatest to me when I reach its climax and I sit back and think, "Damn, that was incredible." while watching the credits roll.

It reminds me a whole lot of having a gigantic feast and sitting back after you're finished, your hunger satiated and a warm smile of satisfaction stretching from ear to ear. That's what keeps me going when I'm playing games, and overcoming the obstacles and difficult parts make that satisfaction all the more sweeter.

Well of course we're humans, but what i want with this is to see what about gaming that makes people enjoy it. What makes the gaming experience so much more fulfilling than other activities that we choose to spend hours playing games, and also what made us stick with our NES or PS1 instead of a football/basketball etc.

I've been gaming since 1985 with my very first console the Atari 2600. Since then it's always been something to take my mind off things and relax with.

I did sports and martial arts and all that jazz but nothing could ever beat unwinding at the end of the day with a good game.

Films are okay, you get to watch it all happen while you relax, books you get a nice bit of relaxation from aswell but with those 2 you are along for the ride, you don't control anything. Games gives you a bit of freedom with your fun.

I get my happy joy feelings from games that grip me. Good action and story that make you want to know whats going to happen.

Final Fantasy 7 was the first game to get me truly gripped.

Assuming we're specifically talking about the role as a gamer (not life as a whole), I love experiencing a good interactive story. Not necessarily Mass Effect style ability to alter the story and choose my path, but a good story that, in some way, makes use of interactivity to enhance it. This includes things like the plot twist in Bioshock, the end of Shadow of the Colossus, the black materia in Final Fantasy VII... all those moments that are powerful on their own, but are made infinitely more so by my involvement in some capacity. Freakin' love it.

Feeling like the biggist bad ass in space, clefting vile Orks in twain with my mighty Power Axe! Firing exploding bullets from my bolt pistol and then tearing a Nob's head in HALF! Healing myself and continuing the slaughter!

I hate "gamers" as a term. Any docuementary about gamers immediately shows hardcore pc gamers and makes it look bad since its all they do.

True, but that's not really my point here.

The reason i used the term is simply because that's what many who play games identify themselves as. I can change it to "video games enthusiast" if that makes you feel any better, but what i wanted with this thread won't be affected by it in any way

I always feel the greatest pleasure of beating one of those impossible bosses that killed me 20 times and cost me part of my wall. As for non game related stuff I think I feel the best whenever I make someone laugh or smile. I also enjoy it immensly if my sports teams do good but I have the terrible luck of liking bad teams

Finishing a book, drinking a cool, cold Coke Cola(no ice), eating Burgers lathered in BBQ sauce, Finishing a game, getting all the achievables in a game, buying a game with my own well earned money, firing my lazors!, beating any game on its hardest difficulty, exploring an open world game and lieing in on a morning(More Sleep!). All this is 100 times better when done in England. Also a nice hot bath is awesome. Wonder if I could do all at once.
