If you're playing a Stealth character I found this mod particularly helpful

http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/19447/?

If you're familiar with the Thief games you'll recognize things like the water arrows, which are great for putting out fires and sneaking around enemies.

Out of all the stealth mods, I found this one to be the most useful, while the ones that make the actual sneaking much harder to be far more detrimental to the overall experience. Without any real clear indication of what the enemies line of sight and how much noise you're making, the Path of Shadows mod really makes the game more frustrating than fun. That said though, playing a high level stealth character gets boring fast, but I can't say any of the mods really find a good balance between challenge and fun. If you do want to use one of them, I'd recommend trying it after you've made a halfway decent stealth character.

I'd really love to play with some mods but for me it's difficult to get them working right even with Nexus and I say no every time to installing them manually so I've only got 2 working and the rest is vanilla for me and it feels good enough for me even if I'm missing out on something I'd probably not pay attention to in the first place.

Why would MS want you to get mods? That means you could be less likely to buy DLC something they get a percentage of, it's just not something I see them letting go through.
Dependencies. I mean I just bought all the DLC on the Steam sale despite having no intention of playing the crappy half assed content they are made up of. But they're needed for the latest versions of the best mods and those mods add immeasurably to the experience.

Beyond that I'm more likely to buy DLC for something I'm actually going to play and mods are the best way to expand the life of a single player game.
