This day started out quiet, almost like every day. But this one had something different. This day was the day the courier came with the contract. The contract stating my life or my demise lay within a sealed envelope.
"Fetch the prisoner!" I heard from the long hallway at the top of the circular stairs. The guard captain came downstairs dangling his keys. Each step he took my heart pounded. *Du-dm Du-dm Du-dm*
"So, it's my day is it?" I asked him with a shier mask on my face, hiding my anxiety.
"The courier arrived today, didn't you hear? The king signed the contract!"
My mood fell. So this was it. I had already accepted death, but actually facing it was another matter all to itself. But I didn't want to be dragged away, kicking and screaming. No, I wanted to be remembered with honor, even though all these men in here were doomed anyway.
"Let's get this over with then" But as the guard captain walked up towards my cell door, he stopped with the keys in his hand, holding them up and his face filled with a thousand questions, but only time to ask one.
"So, sailor. Where did you come from anywa-"
And then it sounded like he was choking on something, first I thought it was simply something stuck in his throat, lunch, hair, a fly? But no, after some time his eyes became simply blank. His eyeballs vanished from within his eyes and only white void was left. First I was scared out of my wits! He fell to the floor, and suddenly I heard more noise upstairs. It sounded like metal and rock colliding.
"Sir?"
I asked blindly and tried to wiggle him with my foot through the bars, but all that happened is that the cage suddenly clicked open and slowly but steadily swung open.
"eeeeeerm..."
I stated, clearly not knowing what was happening. I quietly stepped outside my cell, and over his body. After grabbing his sword and keys, I noticed the other cells were open as well.
