I do think that Martin gets a sick pleasure out of ripping the floor out from under the reader just by destroying characters that he puts so much effort making us love, but I will say that I've never felt the urge to skip a few pages forward.

Which is more than I can say for absolutely any of the other R.R.'s books.

Curses, I just got A Game of Thrones and wanted to review it... WE'LL MEET AGAIN OLIVEIRA8!!!

I'm a bit worried with all these "The Bad Guy Wins" comments, I'm a bit afraid it's spoiled the book for me already, I don't think I'll read anymore of these comments any further >.>
Well this was quite some time ago. ^^ You free to review it again, and do a better job than me.

But if you feel that it has been spoiled for you with all the "The Bad Guys Win", just think of everyone as the "The Bad Guys", then you won't know which of the "The Bad Guys" win. ^^

(Technically they aren't all bad guys. It's that the good guys sometimes do stuff that is not in standards with the typical fantasy good guys.)

Personally I really liked the first 3 books but I felt the 4th one was a bit flat... but I guess it's because it didn't follow my favorite characters.

Can't wait for the mini series on HBO to start!

Depressing? You thought ASOIAF depressing? I wonder what you would think of 1984? Borderline of suicidal? ^^ Or the Pet Semetary, which puts on graveyard mood for a couple of days.
Perhaps it's not my place to interject, but I'm in agreement with The Madman here: The one major criticism I share is that the plot gets dark, but never any lighter.

I've actually read 1984, and it came nowhere near the level of depressing that this did, even if it turned the entire plot resolution on its ear at the 11th hour.

Now, I'm unsure if this is because Martin left the series in purgatory for so long; keeping the current "ending" (or lack of continuation, which is supposed to FINALLY pick up this July) in the midst of the Second Act, or if he genuinely doesn't want us to become attached to any of them.

I'm truly hoping this is due to the Second Act logic (the second act is always the darkest part in a three act story structure), because it would be a damn shame for all of them to die after spending so long with them.

Either way, some triumph would be appreciated, or at least anticipation. Shit, even the teaser at the end of a Feast for Crows was depressing, and IMO, while I do appreciate a tale of tragedy on occasion, does EVERY CHARACTER have to fall deeper and deeper into the mire?

The only characters I'm really invested in at all at this point are Tyrion and Daenerys.
Everyone else is so far down in the FUCK-ME-THIS-SUCKS-HOLE that I really couldn't remain interested.

Come on! Don't say that Joffrey getting killed wasn't the best thing ever? ^^
Oh indeed. If there ever was a little shit who deserved it, it was him.
Though what happens at the Moon Tower later as a result of this is delightfully psychotic.

Now that SOIAF will be getting a TV series, I doubt the story will ever be finished.
It's been 6 years since the last installment in any case and when there's a TV show, there's a monetary incentive not to reach any sort of conclusion.

Note to self: don't get into another book series unless each part is selfcontained or the entire thing has been finished already.
