Well frankly, Fallout games, but you knew I was going to say that.

I also play Rage and Duke Nukem.

I'd recommend Planetside 2. It has it's problems still, but it IS F2P (and you get all but cosmetic content trough in-game play anyway, though you CAN buy your way to quicker progression ofc) so it won't cost you anything to try it out! It's a very high-quality game, very beautiful and the experience of fighting FPS-style alongside hundreds of your player-controlled allies against a similar number of player-controlled enemies is truly amazing!

60 is preferable. 30 can work too.

OT, Painkiller, hands down. Nothing screams badass as wading through hordes of undead with that lawnmower you use there. Also, Serious Sam is pretty good too. Clive Barker's Undying has it's moments, if you can stomach older graphics and overall lack of assets in the game.

Multiplayer: Planetside 2. It's new, it's free, and there's hundreds of other players per continent playing with you. Visuals are beautiful too. And if you don't like it, hey no harm since you didn't spend money on it.

Singleplayer: FEAR if you like a horror in your game too. Bulletstorm for a very...over the top but fun experience. Crysis/Warhead for the beautiful graphics and solid gameplay.

You should try natural selection 2.

Its an fps/rts(one player commands, rest shoot/bite/impale) with one side as aliens (the movie) style colonial marines and the other side basically being the zerg. Usually 8v8, some servers take 12v12.

Its an amazing game and its only $25.

Any console?

GoldenEye 007 or Perfect Dark on the N64.

With a loose enough definition of FPS, give Metroid Prime a shot. Sure, it's a Metroidvania/platformer/puzzler, but there are plenty of FPS combat elements.

Another vote for Natural Selection 2.

Don't really play single player FPS games, but NS2 and PS2 have my interest for the moment, both are great although if you want different NS2 is the way to go.

Far Cry 3s sposed to be a bit of alright though, need to get that soon.

Personally, i really enjoyed Doom3 in spite of the critical response on forums like this one. It had almost everything I expected from a doom sequel minus hordes and hordes of enemies all at once, most encounters were 3 on 1 max.

I still have yet to get tired of shooting things in the face in Fallout New Vegas.

Far Cry 3 is out. And it's pretty good apparently.

Theres Tribes.

And theres always Painkiller. Painkiller is like a fact of nature at this point, there will always be a sequel out every year.
Upvoting Far Cry 3. Awesome locale, smart enemies, awesome plot even if it doesn't reinvent the wheel, and you indeed aren't another member of the USMC or the SAS!

For an excellent old school shooter with a need for some serious skill to get through the harder stages, Serious Sam 3 would be right up your ally.

For something with a bit more ambiance, Bioshock and Metro 2033 are excellent, excellent games. Metro in particular being a very well done survival "horror" game, while Bioshock delivers a story that's now pretty much considered a classic.

Dead Island delivers first-person melee combat really well, which a lengthy campaign and some firearms that are much better balanced when you install a mod or two to make headshots an instant kill and ammo purchasable.

Both Deus Ex and Deus Ex: Human Revolution are some of the best first-person RPGs available, with the first Deus Ex being more RPG than shooter, while its sequel is much more-action oriented than the original.

Borderlands mixes the Diablo style loot system with some competent shooting mechanics, so it ends up being pretty addictive. Though the sequel appears to have much more variety in terms of landscapes and interesting characters compared to the first, so if you've money to spend, that might be the one to get.

And finally, Black Mesa is a completely free mod in which all you need is the free Source Engine off Steam, and it recreates the entirety (minus the Xen levels, but apparently its in the works) of the orignal Half-Life, and even goes so far as to mix up some of the levels around in their layout to make it feel both nostalgic and fresh at the same time. It's really an impressive mod, and a better "HD Remake" than most the stuff big-name companies put out.

If you are tired of Bland Military Shooters, than I would say give Borderlands 2 a try.

Dishonored
Planetside
Bioshock
Resistance
Far Cry
Metro 2033/LastLight
Deus Ex: HR
Fallout 3/NV
Half-Life
Bulletstorm
Killzone
Portal (if it counts?)
Borderlands

Most of these you can get for cheap, so that's a bonus.

Star Wars: Jedi Outcast is an excellent Single Player experience and has one of the greatest level design's I've seen to boot.

Also, I saw someone recommend Star Wars: Republic Commando - take my word for it, it's a good choice.

For multiplayer, depends...
If CoD or BF is all you've played I'd recommend either Quake Arena (which for your convenience has been ported as web-based) or Counter-Strike:GO (if you prefer team-based experiences). Both of those games have been played for a long time and still have a major fallowing, for a good reason may I add.
